Commercial Description:
Originally brewed and bottled for the 2001 National Craft Brewers Conference-a private bottling & release with no distribution. A second batch, Charlie Redux was brewed with very limited distribution. 2005 is the hat-trick batch, Charlie 1981 returns for a third time as part of John's Locker Stock!

Charlie 1981 is an unfiltered strong ale, it exhibits massive bitterness and a firm malt backbone. Hedonistic! Brewed using Pale Malt, Munich and Crystal 40 malts, Horizon, Sterling and Amarillo Hops. Estimated measurements are: 18.2 degrees Plato (OG), 3.5 Degrees Plato (TG), 75 IBU's, 8.5% ABV. Prost!

Charlie 1981 is named in honor of Charlie Papazian, president of the Association of Brewers, founder of the American Homebrewers Association and homebrewing guru. John Maier, Brewmaster for Rogue Ales, made his first batch of beer in 1981 using Papazian's influential book "The New Complete Joy of Homebrewing."

Draft at Summit’s in Atlanta. WOW! I had this beer when it was originally released years ago and remembered it being one of my favorites. Well, it still is. This is a really good beer. Similar to Big Foot but dare I say better.

On tap, labeled as John’s Locker Stock. Clear amber body, thin white head. Bitter citrus (grapefruit rind) flavor with a cereal-y caramel background. Renious finish. I’m suprised to see this styled as an ASA it struck me as an ordinary IPA.

This dark amber ale poured with a modest off-white head. The flavor is quite hoppy and bitter, but massive malting results in a very pleasant balance. Thanks to Charlie P. for inspiring this great brew.

Mike and Molly’s in Champaign, IL, came upon this by mistake. Distributor shipped the wrong beer. Now, accidents like that are great. This was an impressive beer. Clear copper body with a full off-white head that decorated the glass with lacing as it receded. The hops were more than evident with that citrusy tang that refreshes. Full bodied, great mouthfeel. The flavor was rich, nice hops bite, malt sweetness, and a hint of barleywine to it. Damned glad this mistake was made.

Had at D’s 6 pack while visiting a friend. A highly bitter, somewhat thick, pulpy textured ale with plenty of malt. Reminded me a bit of Old Crusty, actually. There are mild orangey flavors floating around, caramel and a touch of butterscotch and biscuit. Not bad, but I could have done with without the high hopping.

On tap at Mike & Mollys in Champaign (by mistake!) And what a wonderous mistake it was. Reminded me of Hop Rod, with the biting hops but firm malt background and structure. Good viscosity here, and strong notes of pine and caramel. Impressive work.

I believe that this is what I had on tap at Pizza Plant (they just listed Johns Locker Stock.) Loads of caramel in the nose with coffee, brown sugar, toffee, slightly fruity, vanilla. Very dark body with a frothy oatmeal head. Flavor has tons of caramel, coffee, toffee. Nuttiness comes forward to be washed away by bitter chococherry finish. Disappointingly thin mouthfeel.

Tap at Horsebrass, PDX. Very clear, deep ruby colored beer with a small tan head. Good lacing is left behind from the thin head after it fades. Aroma is fairly malty and sweet with a pleasant, earthy hop presence. Medium bodied with a medium carbonation level. Initially flavor is sweet and quite malty, but quickly turns bitter, almost to a harsh astringent point. Fair to good.
