Commercial Description:
Originally brewed and bottled for the 2001 National Craft Brewers Conference-a private bottling & release with no distribution. A second batch, Charlie Redux was brewed with very limited distribution. 2005 is the hat-trick batch, Charlie 1981 returns for a third time as part of John's Locker Stock!

Charlie 1981 is an unfiltered strong ale, it exhibits massive bitterness and a firm malt backbone. Hedonistic! Brewed using Pale Malt, Munich and Crystal 40 malts, Horizon, Sterling and Amarillo Hops. Estimated measurements are: 18.2 degrees Plato (OG), 3.5 Degrees Plato (TG), 75 IBU's, 8.5% ABV. Prost!

Charlie 1981 is named in honor of Charlie Papazian, president of the Association of Brewers, founder of the American Homebrewers Association and homebrewing guru. John Maier, Brewmaster for Rogue Ales, made his first batch of beer in 1981 using Papazian's influential book "The New Complete Joy of Homebrewing."

Draft at CAH-Downtown. Copper body with a nice hoppy nose. Lots of fruit coming through here as well as flowers. Surprisingly a lot of sweetness to the aroma. Taste is hoppy, sweet and floral with some odd fruity notes. Fresh mango, flowers, pine, spicy hops and sweet malts as well. Another good Rogue beer. That’s two in a row that "defy" the standard Rogue beer. Body is medium and almost creamy at times. Finishes hoppy with sweet malts, flowers, fresh fruits and an odd spiciness.

On tap: The nose comes across fresh and hoppy with a notice of pine and malt in the background. Beautiful mahogany copper color with a decent sized head served. Flavor comes across rich with personality; hops, sweet malt, caramel, and pine again. Loved this beer so much i wish i could find it in a bottle also.

14-Aug-05 (Draft: 2005 Hopfest at Brouwers Café in Seattle, WA) Wow, look at this gorgeous beer, I think I’m in for a treat! Tan head is half inch tall and very creamy. Dark, very ruddy amber is pushing a light brown actually. Mmm, very tasty! Malty, caramely and sweet, what an awesome backbone. Big hoppy bitterness, but the malt is sufficient to keep it all in perfect balance. Moderate citrus sourness keeps the sweetness at bay as well. The nose is malty, caramely, sweet, quite hoppy with some perfume. Crisp bitterness on the palate, but the sweet malts provide substantial body. Smells really nice, but not incredible. Retention is superb, it won’t quit, maintaining a quarter inch height the entire session. A hop lovers’ dream, but especially if you like big malty strong ales.

22-Aug-05 (Draft: San Diego Brewing Company in San Diego, CA) This is a beer that when I first start to sample it, I think it’s pretty good, but not great. I think it’s so complex, so much going on, that it’s totally overwhelmed my palate. But as I continue to sip it, more and more of the complexity begins to reveal itself, and I really start to appreciate the excellence of this beer. Caramely, malty and sweet, modest amount of roast and dark fruits, some herbs and tea character, hoppy and very bitter. Lots going on with this very complex and flavorful beer. The bitterness becomes stronger as the finish approaches, and alcohol is apparent but not overwhelming. Caramel and tea come to the forefront of the nose, and it smells like an Imperial Red. Though a big beer, the palate is amazingly smooth and velvety. Ruddy brown in color, with an emphasis on the ruddy hue. Off-white head is small and eventually fades away to nothing. Ratings are for the pint I had at Brouwers Café given the impeccable way that bar is run.

Another great offering from the private stock. Good dark read pour with tan head. Nice sweet taste mixed with a good hop. Perfect blend. Can’t say anything bad about this serving.

Draught at Brouwer’s Cafe during HopFest 2005: Darker amber, small white head but with fantastic lacing, slow yet lively carbonation.   Sure looks fantastic!   Big malty nose, with an underlying hop bite.   Smooth malt flavor, very smooth, and very easy to put back for 8.5%.   Hop bitterness emerges from the depths but isn’t as strong as I feared.   Body and mouthfeel are superb, viscous yet velvety.   Clean finish, wonderful balance of big malts and an assertive hop bitterness that lingers well beyond.   I used to think this was a bit green, but as it is this beer is simply wondreful!
