Commercial Description:
Originally brewed and bottled for the 2001 National Craft Brewers Conference-a private bottling & release with no distribution. A second batch, Charlie Redux was brewed with very limited distribution. 2005 is the hat-trick batch, Charlie 1981 returns for a third time as part of John's Locker Stock!

Charlie 1981 is an unfiltered strong ale, it exhibits massive bitterness and a firm malt backbone. Hedonistic! Brewed using Pale Malt, Munich and Crystal 40 malts, Horizon, Sterling and Amarillo Hops. Estimated measurements are: 18.2 degrees Plato (OG), 3.5 Degrees Plato (TG), 75 IBU's, 8.5% ABV. Prost!

Charlie 1981 is named in honor of Charlie Papazian, president of the Association of Brewers, founder of the American Homebrewers Association and homebrewing guru. John Maier, Brewmaster for Rogue Ales, made his first batch of beer in 1981 using Papazian's influential book "The New Complete Joy of Homebrewing."

Draft at Capital Ale House, downtown location. Slightly hazed medium amber, good head, great lace. Caramel and grapefruit aroma, pleasant. Thick caramel malts, huge hops, bitter grapefruit and anise, warming alcohol on finish. Highly enjoyable.

Had on tap at The Drafting Room in Spring House, part of Johns’ Locker Stock (only about 60 places have this on draft as a special release). Poured a somewhat cloudy darker amber with a creamy tan head that stayed around the whole time and laced the glass nicely. Great looking beer. Aroma of citrus hops and caramel matls. As for the flavor: malts up front with a bitter hop bite at the end. A thicker body feel. I really enjoyed this one. So much that I ordered a second, basically due to this being rather rare on tap and being such a solid beer.

Draft at Drafting Room, Exton, PA. Pours hazy brown with aroma of caramel malt, toffee, hopcit, and some peat. Tastes barleywinish, with firm caramel malt, brown sugar, and a solid hop and citrus presence. Well balanced.

Nice floral aroma has me thinking that I’m going to get a sweet and malty beverage. Flavor is surprisingly hoppy at the start but it has a very sweet and maple like finish. I find that the excessive bitterness at the beginning is the perfect compliment to the malts. I wish this was available more often.

Drafting Room, Springhouse, PA. Part of John’s Locker Stock. Hazy amber-brown body with a creamy beige head. Pungent and open malty bouquet with elements of maple, brown sugar, and woody and earthy hops. Has an aged malt character but tons of hop flavor and big bitterness. Reminds me a little of Sierra Nevada Bigfoot as far as the balance goes. Very good beer.

Pours with a dark brown body topped by a medium thick head with some lacing. It’s bitter and hoppy with a slight malt note and a peppery alcohol note. Full bodied and warming.

Draught @ Horseshoe Pub. Good nose, Citrus, lemon & grapefruit, grassy, doughy, little funk anout it. Tad hazy orangy brown color, good head that faded. Bitter flavors, like aroma with citrus dominating. Thicker body, creamy oily mouthfeel, bitter finish. Tasty, though maybe too one sided.

On tap at the horse brass pub, I think this beer is nothing like the orignial, so keep that in mind for the rating. Pours a verk dark red/brown with a soft off-white head. TONS of alcohol present, very harsh and unfriendly. Lots of hops give this a chunk of bitterness in the finish. Medium weight and thickness on the palate with a sweetness upfront that is killed by the alcohol assault. Lacks mellow smoothness that might come with age, not a good pint right now.
