Commercial Description:
Originally brewed and bottled for the 2001 National Craft Brewers Conference-a private bottling & release with no distribution. A second batch, Charlie Redux was brewed with very limited distribution. 2005 is the hat-trick batch, Charlie 1981 returns for a third time as part of John's Locker Stock!

Charlie 1981 is an unfiltered strong ale, it exhibits massive bitterness and a firm malt backbone. Hedonistic! Brewed using Pale Malt, Munich and Crystal 40 malts, Horizon, Sterling and Amarillo Hops. Estimated measurements are: 18.2 degrees Plato (OG), 3.5 Degrees Plato (TG), 75 IBU's, 8.5% ABV. Prost!

Charlie 1981 is named in honor of Charlie Papazian, president of the Association of Brewers, founder of the American Homebrewers Association and homebrewing guru. John Maier, Brewmaster for Rogue Ales, made his first batch of beer in 1981 using Papazian's influential book "The New Complete Joy of Homebrewing."

Draft at San Diego Brewing Co. Malty aroma with dark fruits mostly dark cherry, and some vanilla. Flavors were similar with some added alcohol, and then a finish that was surprisingly hoppy. Pretty tasty.

On Tap: Heavy, grassy aroma; full bodied with heavy caramel malt backbone, some bread and toast notes; light, pleasant pheonelic and medicinal hints; sharply bitter throughout that’s more than a match for the huge malt base; woody, alcoholic and complex; quite promising but a little on the harsh and young side; I need a bottle to age for a while.

On tap at the Drafting Room in Springhouse, PA. Poured a dark brown with an averaged sized off white head. Aromas of pine, grapefruit and caramel. Tastes of citrus (oranges and grapefruit), nuts and caramel. Has almost a light sour start that ends in a nice bitter finish.

On Tap at Bitter Creek Ale House: Lovely deep dark brown with a light brown head. A full, sticky lacing covered the glass. It carries strong alcohol aromas with hops that whisper in your ear "How do you like them Grapefruit rinds?" The body is rich and creamy followed by a great bitter finish. A tasty speciman of a beer!

On tap at the Hop Devil. Pours a deep brown with a frothy lite brown head. Aroma is of huge piney hops with a fair amount of malty cookiness. The innitial flavor reveals little more than resinous piney hops but as it warms and as you grow accustomed, there is a deep carameliness but all in all it is pretty straight foreward. The body is full and lush. The bitterness is huge and long-lasting. I’d love to find a bottle of this and give it a few years because much like old crusty, this is pretty harsh when fresh

Tap at Bitter Creek in Boise. A littel birdie told me that this was in at one of the nicer alehouses in town so I had to make a special trip. A deep clear mahogany with a medium sized light tan head. Sheets of persistant lascing coated the glas almost all the way down. Aromsa of dark bitterness, woody malts and a strong hops presence. Flavors were mostly hops and bitter woody flavors. Seemd more like a ramped up ESP or dark IPA. The ABV felt about right for the % and otherwise, simple straight forward taste. Moderate feel, not particularly rich or smooth. Nice but not that interesting. Always glad to try these limited runs.

Draft for one day here at Summits in Atlanta. Dark brown pour. Huge aroma of sweet malts and caramels, and some citrusy hops. Medium thick body, with huge sweet malty and caramel flavors, some breadiness, and fairly big in citrus and spicy hops. Big bitter bite.

On tap @ the Falling Rock poured a hazy dark bronze with an amber head. Aromas of carmel and toffee. Flavor was carmel, bread, and roasted malt with a bitter finish.
