Commercial Description:
Originally brewed and bottled for the 2001 National Craft Brewers Conference-a private bottling & release with no distribution. A second batch, Charlie Redux was brewed with very limited distribution. 2005 is the hat-trick batch, Charlie 1981 returns for a third time as part of John's Locker Stock!

Charlie 1981 is an unfiltered strong ale, it exhibits massive bitterness and a firm malt backbone. Hedonistic! Brewed using Pale Malt, Munich and Crystal 40 malts, Horizon, Sterling and Amarillo Hops. Estimated measurements are: 18.2 degrees Plato (OG), 3.5 Degrees Plato (TG), 75 IBU's, 8.5% ABV. Prost!

Charlie 1981 is named in honor of Charlie Papazian, president of the Association of Brewers, founder of the American Homebrewers Association and homebrewing guru. John Maier, Brewmaster for Rogue Ales, made his first batch of beer in 1981 using Papazian's influential book "The New Complete Joy of Homebrewing."

Poured a cloudy brownish red color with a medium sized, off white head that left nice lacing on the glass. Aroma of citrus hops, toffee, nuts, bready and caramel malts. Taste of chewy caramel and toasted malts, dried fruits, and a huge grapefruit bitterness in the finish.

Cloudy amber colour with thin off white head. Robust grapefruit hop nose. Bitter grapefruit taste with slight balancing malt finish.

Draught at Capital Ale House in Innsbrook. Appears a dark cloudy reddish brown with a small off-white head. Aroma is rich and sweet and malty with a floral, citrusy hop nose. Some mild fruitiness and dark dried fruit also comes through in the aroma. Flavor is malty sweet upfront: caramel and toffee. Raison and plum ester notes follow along with a big citrusy, piney, and spicy hop profile. Interesting mix of tangerine American amarillo and spicy Noble Sterling hops. Alcohol warmth in the slightly dry finish. Body is very full and smooth with a moderate carbonation level fitting in this style.

Thanks to CaptainCougar for sharing this Rogue rarity. Pours a light brown with hints of red at the edges under a light tan head. Strong hop aroma with lots of warm honey notes to it. Thin body and a dry finish stand out. In my mind the flavor is characteristic of Rogues’ barleywine. Tasty.

Thanks to the Captain for bringing this one! Pours hazy amber. Aroma is funky fruit, reminds me of a barleywine. Flavor is suprisingly hoppy, lots of pine needles and grapefruit, sweet malts balancing. Nice!

Very malty with an extemely nice, riounded buitterness that has come with aging. Long, long, long finish. One of the best Rogue experiences I’ve had.

I was lucky enough to have this beer at the Rogue restuarant on tap. If by chance you have a bottle, drink it slowly and savor every last drop. I could write a book on the experence you will find in that bottle. But, where’s the fun in that?!

Bought the last case Rogue AleHouse in Portland had for sale in May 2003. A rich beer that combines a complex mix of fruit and malty hops. Its’s alcoholic effects are swift and welcomed. I could not wait to indulge myself with the next sip.
