Commercial Description:
Originally brewed and bottled for the 2001 National Craft Brewers Conference-a private bottling & release with no distribution. A second batch, Charlie Redux was brewed with very limited distribution. 2005 is the hat-trick batch, Charlie 1981 returns for a third time as part of John's Locker Stock!

Charlie 1981 is an unfiltered strong ale, it exhibits massive bitterness and a firm malt backbone. Hedonistic! Brewed using Pale Malt, Munich and Crystal 40 malts, Horizon, Sterling and Amarillo Hops. Estimated measurements are: 18.2 degrees Plato (OG), 3.5 Degrees Plato (TG), 75 IBU's, 8.5% ABV. Prost!

Charlie 1981 is named in honor of Charlie Papazian, president of the Association of Brewers, founder of the American Homebrewers Association and homebrewing guru. John Maier, Brewmaster for Rogue Ales, made his first batch of beer in 1981 using Papazian's influential book "The New Complete Joy of Homebrewing."

Unmistakable papaya/mango esters, grassy. This didn’t hold up too well following the last Rogue Skullsplitter - a little bland. Good bitterness, a little starchy mouthfeel, malty caramel. Foggy bronze. Lost my notes. Good.

Drank, Uber, Yeah. Very malty nose, thin light tan head. Taste is much like a barleywine, nice maltiness, alcohol shows up more then you’d like, but it’s good. Light caramel showing.

Draft @ TFD Boise: Pours a nice, bright copper with a thick, creamy beige head. Terrific lacing. Aroma is floral hops and some pine. Flavor is loaded with hops. Just a little bit of caramel maltiness, but mostly citrus and floral hops. Great on the palate too. A fine brew.

On draft at Uber. Not usually a Rogue fan, but I’ll try anything if it is associated with my man Charlie P. Kind of a hop bomb at first. Not very balanced as the bitterness lingers the entire time. Got a lot of crystal malt sweetness under the bitterness. Very dry all the way through. Go Pac Man.

Bitter hop nose with a nice pine floating about. Hazy brown body with a bitter hop body. Malt and sublte pine on the finish.

Poured dark amber with a thin head. Strong hop aroma. Taste is bland, yet it has a solid hop backbone. Hints of caramel. A little hot, and a lingering bitter finish.
