Commercial Description:
Originally brewed and bottled for the 2001 National Craft Brewers Conference-a private bottling & release with no distribution. A second batch, Charlie Redux was brewed with very limited distribution. 2005 is the hat-trick batch, Charlie 1981 returns for a third time as part of John's Locker Stock!

Charlie 1981 is an unfiltered strong ale, it exhibits massive bitterness and a firm malt backbone. Hedonistic! Brewed using Pale Malt, Munich and Crystal 40 malts, Horizon, Sterling and Amarillo Hops. Estimated measurements are: 18.2 degrees Plato (OG), 3.5 Degrees Plato (TG), 75 IBU's, 8.5% ABV. Prost!

Charlie 1981 is named in honor of Charlie Papazian, president of the Association of Brewers, founder of the American Homebrewers Association and homebrewing guru. John Maier, Brewmaster for Rogue Ales, made his first batch of beer in 1981 using Papazian's influential book "The New Complete Joy of Homebrewing."

Draft at FW Saucer. Pours a tan/red orange with a nice sized white head. Aroma is strong with the hops! Pine, earth, and slight floral quality. There’s some caramel flavor, wood, and a slight candy-like note, but already it’s very bitter. Finishes even more bitter than that with the taste of grapefruit first, followed up by some charred wood that a few sips of water simply won’t shake off. Tastes like a slightly modified IIPA, but with a little bit more earth and way too much charred bitterness. Maybe I don’t like some of the hops in this, but the bitterness was too burnt and too strong. Good mouthfeel though and a medium body with carbonation in the right place.

tap-citrussy orange aroma, off white lacing head, with an amber orange color, really nice flavor, with some sweetness up front backed up with some strong crystal hop bitterness towards the end. Did not realize the brew was in honor of Charlie Papazian, who quite frankly, is awesome. Beer is nice, but does not exactly do his legacy justice.

On tap @ Brew Kettle’s 2007 Ogrefest: Hazy orangey amber w/a lasting cream colored head. Piney hops & toasted malt up front, also grassy w/ a light caramel. Perfumey alcohol, hop dominant; Bready malts come through as it warms, low level of fruity esters. Inital flavor is green hops then turns piney. Alcohol is less than subtle in flavor. Bitterness starts mid palate and lasts into the finish. Bready malt up front to initially balance the hop flavor. Not much caramel or fruity esters, it’s all about the hops. Dry & bitter finish & aftertaste. Warming alcohol, smooth medium fuller body, lower medium carbonation. A bit too one dimensional for my liking. I like a good charge of hops every now and again, but this one needs some work in the balance department.

12 oz handbottle, via Dickinsonbeer. Pours a clear bright copper colored body under a one finger foamy beige head that faded to a clingy ring. Aroma is citric and resiny hops with a bready and crackery maltiness below. A touch of alcohol showing as well. Flavor is thick and sticky resiny hops with a bitter lingering finish. The malt is quite hefty as well, but plays second fiddle. Some alcohol burn on the finish. Mouthfeel is medium-full bodied with nice soft but active carbonation. Finishes a little sticky. A pretty nice beer, and above average for Rogue.

On draft at Freakin’ Frog. Great beer!!! Amazingly integrated, the hops, alchohol and malt all entwined in a ballet in a cask. I still have wood.

hazy amber with a thin head. minimal lacing. aroma is dominated by pine hoppiness with grapefruit there. backed up by caramel malt note. taste dominate sprucy hoppiness and zesty grapefruit. the malt flavor is there in the middle but never dominate. it is caramel with a touch of toasty biscuit. finish is a big grapefruit pine bitterness that is present long after the drink. it has a warming effect.

On draft at Green Leafe, Williamsburg. Robust amber hue with a rusty tinge, delivered with a firm head that slowly settled into a thin foam cap. Light floral hoppy aroma which left me a bit off guard on the first swallow ... thick and vicuous, stiffly alcoholic with a big hop oil undertow, too. Quality brew. Strong ... but I’m glad the bartender accidentally gave me a full glass.(#2732, 3/4/2007)
