Commercial Description:
Originally brewed and bottled for the 2001 National Craft Brewers Conference-a private bottling & release with no distribution. A second batch, Charlie Redux was brewed with very limited distribution. 2005 is the hat-trick batch, Charlie 1981 returns for a third time as part of John's Locker Stock!

Charlie 1981 is an unfiltered strong ale, it exhibits massive bitterness and a firm malt backbone. Hedonistic! Brewed using Pale Malt, Munich and Crystal 40 malts, Horizon, Sterling and Amarillo Hops. Estimated measurements are: 18.2 degrees Plato (OG), 3.5 Degrees Plato (TG), 75 IBU's, 8.5% ABV. Prost!

Charlie 1981 is named in honor of Charlie Papazian, president of the Association of Brewers, founder of the American Homebrewers Association and homebrewing guru. John Maier, Brewmaster for Rogue Ales, made his first batch of beer in 1981 using Papazian's influential book "The New Complete Joy of Homebrewing."

Draught at Happy Gnome, St. Paul. Creamy, caramelly aroma that is rich, sweet, vinous and has oak aged character. Hazy dark red body with a good sized tan head. Some good lace. Molasses aspect in the flavor. Pretty good, though not outstanding, which is about par for the course with Rogue.

Copper color with a bubbly head. Aromas of sweet candy like malts and a good amount of citrus and earthy, peppery hops. Rather sweet up front, almost like candy, bordering cloying, but not. A big floral, citrus, and peppery finish leaves a dry mouth feel. Medium bodied. Nice and enjoyable.

Draft at Firewaters. Poured a clear orangey amber with a small of white head. Hop forward aroma with some nice caramel malt balancing it out. Flavor of grapefruit, alcohol and caramel. Not bad especially considering it’s been a long time since Rogue made a beer I actually enjoyed.

Draft at The Brickskeller. Poured a clear dark orange color. The head was white with good retention and left a nice sheet of lace behind. Aroma was of flowery hop and subdued caramel. Smooth mouth feel with carbonation on the low end of the spectrum. Dry on the tongue. Tasted of grapefruit rind, raw alcohol, and grass. There was moderate hop bitterness of about 5 out of 10. Decent, but somewhat overrate in my opinion.

I had been seeking this beer out in the DC metro region and I finally caught up with it on tap at the Brickskeller. Pours a deep, brownish amber with a creamy slightly tan head that left rings around the glass every stop to the bottom. Aroma is strong fruity hops, grapefruit, orange with a slight biscuity aroma. Flavor is heavy bitterness but the hops took on a tropical fruitiness I didn’t expect. Finish is dry and bitter. Very drinkable and unique.

(draft @ The Old Toad - Rochester, NY) Orange in color with a mound of puffy white foam. Aroma is rich and hoppy with some citrus at the end of it. Flavor is very bitter and hoppy with a light malt backbone and a little bit of grapefruit at the end. Finishes very smooth and bitter. Quite nice.
