Commercial Description:
Dedicated to Spanish author Juan de la Cueva, who, in 1575, wrote of a Mexican dish that combined seedless chipotles with beer: Chipotle Ale is based on Rogue's Oregon Golden Ale, but delicately spiced with smoked chipotle chile peppers. Deep golden in color with a tight head, rich malty aroma, delicately smooth and crisp flavor, and subtle chipotle chili finish. Formerly known and packages as Mexicali Rogue, Chipotle Ale is created from Northwest Harrington, Klages, and Maier Munich Malts; Willamette and Cascade hops; and Smoked Jalapeno (Chipolte) Peppers. Chipotle Ale is targeted for spring release and available in a 22-ounce bottle and on draft. Blend it with Rogue Chocolate Stout and create a Mole' black and tan!

Measurements: 12 degrees Plato, IBU 35, Apparent attenuation 82, Lovibond 23

Pour: Bomber into a a Pizza Port pint glass. Orangey amber color. Displays a decent ecru head but it’s on the fizzy side. No lacing.

Nose: Smokey cured meat aroma, similar to the Schlenkerla rauchbiers.

Mouth: The base beer seems pretty boring, just some sweetish grainy malt flavor, but the chiles make it interesting. I like spicy food and all, but I’ve never had an interest in melting my face with capsaicin. Fortunately this beer isn’t all that hot really. It gives a nice, mild, lingering burn in the back of the mouth but not much more. It doesn’t take a long time to acclimate to. There’s also a little bit of pepper flavor in in addition to the spiciness, both black and chipotle. Medium-thin body, good carbonation level.

Overall it accomplishes what it set out to do perfectly, but it just isn’t particularly appealing or complex. It’s a great novelty, but not a great beer.

22oz - Aroma is toasted malts with a chili pepper finish. Pours bright red with a medium head and good lacing. Flavor matches aroma. The pepper is subtle, but does provide a little heat. Palate is dry. Tasty but a bit too mild.

Bottle. Pours copper orange with an off white head. Sweet malt aroma with a touch of chili pepper. The chili pepper in the flavor warms the mouth and makes it hard for me to discern anything more than some faint sweet malt. Not bad.

Tap @ Bar Great Harry. Aroma is surprisingly diacetyl, very strong butterscotch but underneath that the traditional Rogue hop mix is present. Taste has no diacetyl or at least the chipotle takes over. I forgot how strong the pepper is, oh man it burns the throat. And the smoke is present as well from the peppers. The malts are nice and clean paving the way for the peppers to play the pivotal role in the flavor. Just from past experiences, I never have had diacetyl in a Rogue beer and I do not remember the peppers being so spicy in the bottled version.

From bottle. Never thought I would experience another chilly beer, but here is the Rogue Chipotle Ale. As expected from Rogue, another quality made ale. Aroma is strong in hops, rich syrup like of pears and plums. All masked by a distinct smoked feel. Nice amber colour with a thin white head. A strong smoked flavour. At first I forgot about the chilli, they kick in later. Yes chilli all right. I feel a strange sensation on the lips. Feels like I’ve rubbed a chilli pepper on my mouth. Putting the chilli effect to onside, this is a decent ale. Hops, plenty of flavour and a good texture. Just not agreeable with me. Bye eck!

Bottle. Pours a amber hue. Nose is smoky pepper. Flavors are dominated by smoky chipotle peppers. Different beer, worth a try! I am interested to try the Mole black and tan sometime.

Bottle courtesy MrBunn.Odd. Very clear copper pour with a half-finger head. Strong scent of malt spice and hops with just the slightest tinge of smoke in the background. Rather crisp flavor but a little light. Good fishin beer...bass that is. It has a peculiar burn in the throat that I can only attribute to the peppers. As stated, light mix of hops spice and malt, with a smidge of smoke in there. strange finish.

Wasnt sure about picking this one up until carythedude told me it was aight. He has questionable taste in clothing, hair, and women, but generally knows when beers are aight or not. Smokey aroma. Dude hit it right on the head with spicey and bacon. Yeah, I also dug it.
