Commercial Description:
Dedicated to Spanish author Juan de la Cueva, who, in 1575, wrote of a Mexican dish that combined seedless chipotles with beer: Chipotle Ale is based on Rogue's Oregon Golden Ale, but delicately spiced with smoked chipotle chile peppers. Deep golden in color with a tight head, rich malty aroma, delicately smooth and crisp flavor, and subtle chipotle chili finish. Formerly known and packages as Mexicali Rogue, Chipotle Ale is created from Northwest Harrington, Klages, and Maier Munich Malts; Willamette and Cascade hops; and Smoked Jalapeno (Chipolte) Peppers. Chipotle Ale is targeted for spring release and available in a 22-ounce bottle and on draft. Blend it with Rogue Chocolate Stout and create a Mole' black and tan!

Measurements: 12 degrees Plato, IBU 35, Apparent attenuation 82, Lovibond 23

Pours a cloudy amber color with a thick off white head. It has a nice spicy hop aroma with a vegtable and herb finish. Initially it is nice and spicy with an interesting kick but very apparent in the after taste and finish. This herb and pepper spice was much different from any other spiced beer. The finish could have had more hops but then again who knows if more alpha acids would have and could have ruined the beer. Overall it is a great food to have with food possibly mexican.

maybe i lack appreciation for something as bold as this? maybe i needed to have a meal with it rather than drink it straight up? nevertheless, i’m fan of spicy, but this beer was too spicy! aroma was awesome, it looked amazing (brass color, perfect head), the flavors were really good, what happened after you swallowed was THE END

Bottle. Pours coppery with a thick head. Smells malty and smokey and peppery. Tastes totally good with strong malt flavor, followed by the smokey pepper flavor and some sweetness. Aftertaste is very good as the flavor of the smokey pepper leaves you wanting another drink and it pairs well with any meat during a meal.

Bomber bought in Wyoming. Pours a nice dark amber color with a thick fluffy head. The aroma is mostly sweet and powerful caramel malts, some light hops also. The taste is similarly full if rich and sweet caramel malts, the real difference is a spicy and zesty chipotle in the finish. Not quite a burn, but serious spiciness in the finish. Very different, not bad, though not an everyday drink for sure. A nice zingy mouthfeel.

22 oz bottle shared at a beer tasting / monopoly game with my girlfriend and close friends. Pours a fairly dark, very hazy amberish-brown. Aromas aren’t too prominent, a touch of heat and hoppy bitterness greet the nose. Taste is straightforward. Malt profile is there, a bit bready and biscuity mixed with some nice bittering floral hops. End of taste takes on a nice dry heat, from the oils of the Chipotle seeds. Very nice on the tounge. Very interesting as well. Points for creativity and ability to work the heat into a beer that works well, lack of points for one dimensional appeal. Ok.

I thought this beer went quite well with smoked chicken or spicy chicken wings. Nice smokey pepper flavor. Not an every day beer but interesting.

Just a friendly warning: Do not drink this beer while eating buffalo wings. You have been warned.

Now this one was a lot of fun! I can see that some people had a little trouble dealing with this stuff, and it is an oddball brew, but I liked it - so thumbs up from this rater. I had it on tap. The soapy aroma is not too enticing. Brass color. The flavor is dominated by smoked chili peppers, plus a little leather. It is a little risky, but I think it works out well. Thanks to Rogue for another daring ale.
