Commercial Description:
Dedicated to Spanish author Juan de la Cueva, who, in 1575, wrote of a Mexican dish that combined seedless chipotles with beer: Chipotle Ale is based on Rogue's Oregon Golden Ale, but delicately spiced with smoked chipotle chile peppers. Deep golden in color with a tight head, rich malty aroma, delicately smooth and crisp flavor, and subtle chipotle chili finish. Formerly known and packages as Mexicali Rogue, Chipotle Ale is created from Northwest Harrington, Klages, and Maier Munich Malts; Willamette and Cascade hops; and Smoked Jalapeno (Chipolte) Peppers. Chipotle Ale is targeted for spring release and available in a 22-ounce bottle and on draft. Blend it with Rogue Chocolate Stout and create a Mole' black and tan!

Measurements: 12 degrees Plato, IBU 35, Apparent attenuation 82, Lovibond 23

What a weird beer. I’m no stranger to the styles that one could attempt to pigeon hole this one into.. Amber Ale, Fruit/Vegetable Ale, Smoke beer. One thing I’m not sure that I would call it is a Golden or Blond Ale, but oh well. Poured from tap a light amber with a small and diminishing head that stuck around at the edges of the glass leaving a little lace. The scent wasn’t much in general, delicate fruitiness, a little yeast, some hops, fairly typical amber ale. The taste initially is much of the same, lightly hoppy very crisp, very enjoyable amber beer with the strangest hint of fresh red pepper. But hold on it gets more interesting about halfway into the pint. The flavor starts to take on a bit of smoky bitterness, then it just hits you. This beer is getting spicier ever sip I take, it is very pleasant but a little odd. At this point the chipolte flavors start to dominate the beer. I would only have this every now and again, but it is a very unique and tasty brew.

22 oz bottle poured a light orange. Aroma is of some sweet malt and chili spiciness. Flavor is of some malts, then the chili spiciness and slight smokiness hits. Not as strong a chili flavor as I expected, but a very good beer.

Hazy light brown color with a sticky, thin head. It smells a bit sugary, almost like a glazed doughnut (mmm) mixed with organic, wet hops aromas. The taste a little bitter, grainy. I’m looking for the chili flavor but I can’t find it. Maybe a little chili bitterness in the back of the tongue? In any case, not as intense as I thought it would be, though it’s a fine ale.

650 ml bottle. Pours hazy amber orange, thin off white head. Aroma is chili and malt. Flavor is chili, malt, some smokiness, chili finish. Not too spicy to be painful (like CBW Mexican Mole) but also not complex.

Bottle. Large beige head, lots of lacing, amber body, hazy. Aroma is slight pepper, and grain. Flavor is like mildly spicy peppers mixed with a bland ale--smoky, tingly to the tongue, and well that’s it. Not too special. Might be really good mixed with a stout. Re-rate notes: After having this beer with some shrimp scampi, I think the beer has much more promise in being matched with some food or in cooking.

I’m not impressed. I don’t get alot of spice anywhere except in my chest.. aka heartburn. This is just not enjoyable to me. Smells like a chocolate chipotle candy bar I had once that wasn’t too good. The taste is slightly hoppy, with a small, cardboard malty background. Weak. Unimpressive. Blahhhhh....

Pretty refreshing ale. I thought the chipolte taste might be a little odd, but it smooths out and is not obtrusive. Almost more of a smokey flavor....close to a smoked porter, but more of a hops flavor.

Original. Pours a cloudy amber with an off white head. Smells little if at all. Flavor is clean and crisp. Sweet malt with a little hop and then then spicy finish to balance. Had mine with a blackend strip steak and a baker loaded with sour cream and chives. A beer to be consumend with spicy foods.
