Commercial Description:
Dedicated to Spanish author Juan de la Cueva, who, in 1575, wrote of a Mexican dish that combined seedless chipotles with beer: Chipotle Ale is based on Rogue's Oregon Golden Ale, but delicately spiced with smoked chipotle chile peppers. Deep golden in color with a tight head, rich malty aroma, delicately smooth and crisp flavor, and subtle chipotle chili finish. Formerly known and packages as Mexicali Rogue, Chipotle Ale is created from Northwest Harrington, Klages, and Maier Munich Malts; Willamette and Cascade hops; and Smoked Jalapeno (Chipolte) Peppers. Chipotle Ale is targeted for spring release and available in a 22-ounce bottle and on draft. Blend it with Rogue Chocolate Stout and create a Mole' black and tan!

Measurements: 12 degrees Plato, IBU 35, Apparent attenuation 82, Lovibond 23

bottle. hazy copper pour with thick off white head. spice, hop, slightly metallic aroma. smoky, earthy, spicy, pepper. spice is not well balanced. too overpowering. I’m a fan of Rogue and I don’t feel this lives up to their standards. This beer is offensive to your palate.

Bomber - Poured a dark, reddish amber in color with a thin whitish head. Aroma is malty and with a hint of some spice. Flavor is smoky and a bit weird. Not really any of the spicy hotness that you would expect from this kind of beer mix. Flavor is sort of skunked in a strange sort of way... not a fine taste... almost a "infected raw meat" flavor... not all that pleasant. Not really al that impressive...

(22 oz bottle: $4.39 at Holiday Wine Cellar in Escondido, CA) I’ve had this in the past and while the chipotle wasn’t overwhelming or unpleasant, it was still a significant distraction from an otherwise decent beer. So I decided to buy a bottle and let it sit a year to see if the aging would diminish the chipotle. Not a chance. While this beer starts out like a nice, lightly caramely amber, somewhat earthy and toasty, mildly bitter from hops with lots and lots of smoke, there is still a mild burn in the back of my throat from chipotle in the finish that builds and builds with each sip. Earth, smoke and hot peppers in the nose with little else, but I’d rather smell the hot peppers than taste them in this beer. Medium-bodied with average carbonation. Hazy amber in color with a small but persistent, off-white head. Lacing is arranged in drooping circles down the glass. I truly love the solid smokiness of this beer, but could do without the hot pepper burn. I like a little kick to my food, but I guess I feel differently about beer.

Bomber: Cloudy bright orange with a stable thick white head, smoky grain and rich earth in the aroma, starts and ends lightly bitter, full bodied with a slight hot bite at the end, mellow carbonation, with a taste that sticks in the mouth.

Bottle. Cloudy amber colour with a little head. Nice aroma of soft but heavy caramel and some maltness. Strange flavour of caramel, smoke and some chili finish, ends up a little hot.
