Commercial Description:
Dedicated to Spanish author Juan de la Cueva, who, in 1575, wrote of a Mexican dish that combined seedless chipotles with beer: Chipotle Ale is based on Rogue's Oregon Golden Ale, but delicately spiced with smoked chipotle chile peppers. Deep golden in color with a tight head, rich malty aroma, delicately smooth and crisp flavor, and subtle chipotle chili finish. Formerly known and packages as Mexicali Rogue, Chipotle Ale is created from Northwest Harrington, Klages, and Maier Munich Malts; Willamette and Cascade hops; and Smoked Jalapeno (Chipolte) Peppers. Chipotle Ale is targeted for spring release and available in a 22-ounce bottle and on draft. Blend it with Rogue Chocolate Stout and create a Mole' black and tan!

Measurements: 12 degrees Plato, IBU 35, Apparent attenuation 82, Lovibond 23

Smallish head with medium lacing. A bubbly orange color. Aroma is peppery, taste to match with a hint of bitter.

On tap at the brewery. Funky earth and foot aroma. Piney. Clear amber with a off-white head. Flavor is funky, with some deeper smoke, a bit of rubber, some spicy pork belly and a touch of pine. A light edge of burning on the back of the throat. One of the least offensive pepper beers I’ve had, if that’s saying something. And that’s saying something.

[1903-20081214] 1pt6floz bottle. Smoky leaves and autumn campfires outdoors aroma. Clear, amber red body with a long-lasting creamy off-white head. Smoky peppers and lots of charred wood in the flavour. Medium body. Interesting to try, but "it tastes like burning."

12 oz bottle. No real aroma, just bright and shiny on the olfactory. Slight haze on an otherwise yellow orange brown beer. Good tingly carbonation. Generally bitter and ale like but with this heat thing going on. Heat and warmth makes this a little more interesting than the typical ale. Bitter aftertaste personality. Nifty finish with a medium hot pepper burn. End of finsih is a penetrating astringent roof of mouth impression. Glad I tried this even tho it was $2 more than my average beer.

As one who loves hot peppers.. this was my first drain pour. I did not like this... period. I was even thinking... wait I’ll probably like regardless off some of the poorer reviews. Nope.. I think if it was a different type of pepper? I dunno... Yuch!

22oz bottle. Pours a clear body with a darker gold color. Thin, off-white head that leaves a soapy lacing. Aroma is smokey and earthy. Some sweet caramels and spicy pepper, but I’m mostly picking up smoke. Flavor is pretty cool. Starts off semi-sweet and then grows in smokiness towards the middle. The smoke lasts through the finish, which is when a light jalapeno spiciness kicks in. Its actually a little hot and burns the throat a bit. The lingering taste is smoke and hot peppers with a soft caramel. Palate is medium to full and smooth. Overall, surprisingly balanced. Its as if the peppers balance this out instead of the other way around. I love when breweries try crazy things like this even though most people will respond negatively. A fun beer to drink.
