Commercial Description:
Dedicated to Spanish author Juan de la Cueva, who, in 1575, wrote of a Mexican dish that combined seedless chipotles with beer: Chipotle Ale is based on Rogue's Oregon Golden Ale, but delicately spiced with smoked chipotle chile peppers. Deep golden in color with a tight head, rich malty aroma, delicately smooth and crisp flavor, and subtle chipotle chili finish. Formerly known and packages as Mexicali Rogue, Chipotle Ale is created from Northwest Harrington, Klages, and Maier Munich Malts; Willamette and Cascade hops; and Smoked Jalapeno (Chipolte) Peppers. Chipotle Ale is targeted for spring release and available in a 22-ounce bottle and on draft. Blend it with Rogue Chocolate Stout and create a Mole' black and tan!

Measurements: 12 degrees Plato, IBU 35, Apparent attenuation 82, Lovibond 23

The aroma is smokey. Pours amber with a good sized head. I was hoping the taste would be spicy (huge salsa/hot sauce/pepper fan) but it is basically just smokey. Not a bad beer by any means, just not what i was expecting. Probably be interesting if paired with mexican or other spicy foods.

Draft at Redlight Redlight. A clear, dark amber colored body is crowned with a fleeting, foamy, cream colored head. Minimal, spotty lacing marks the glass. The aroma is sweeter than expected from a pepper beer, notes of biscuit and caramel accompanied by a light smokiness and subtle, peppery spice. Flavors show more like a smoked lager than anything, a mild caramel malt base showing alongside black peppercorns, white pepper, and charred woody notes. Chipotle isn’t specifically identifiable. Medium bodied and moderately carbonated, it goes down smooth and easy, which was also unexpected. Not great, but not bad either. I could drink a couple of these.

On tap at Redlight. Sorry, Rogue, but this is horrible. I guess I can see how somebody would like this, but it was just too much for me. I like chipotle flavor... on my burrito. I gagged on this. Just not very tasty in my beer.

Pours a cloudy amber color with a thick off white head. It has a nice spicy hop aroma with a vegtable and herb finish. Initially it is nice and spicy with an interesting kick but very apparent in the after taste and finish. This herb and pepper spice was much different from any other spiced beer. The finish could have had more hops but then again who knows if more alpha acids would have and could have ruined the beer. Overall it is a great food to have with food possibly mexican.

maybe i lack appreciation for something as bold as this? maybe i needed to have a meal with it rather than drink it straight up? nevertheless, i’m fan of spicy, but this beer was too spicy! aroma was awesome, it looked amazing (brass color, perfect head), the flavors were really good, what happened after you swallowed was THE END

Bottle. Pours coppery with a thick head. Smells malty and smokey and peppery. Tastes totally good with strong malt flavor, followed by the smokey pepper flavor and some sweetness. Aftertaste is very good as the flavor of the smokey pepper leaves you wanting another drink and it pairs well with any meat during a meal.
