Lots of lacing and sheeting on the glass. Lovely sweet chocolate aroma. Taste progresses from sweet malt and chocolate to more bitter chocolate, with a nice balance of flavors the whole way. skortila (2905), Bunnik, Netherlands

| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Aug 15, 2008 Dark brown beer with a brown head. The aroma is dominated by sweet chocolate with some subtle notes of grain. Flavor is at first sweet chocolate then its backed up by some nice american hobs which bitterness is tasted on the tongue but not in the moutharoma. Great beer. jjuf1853 (471), Land O Lakes, Florida, USA
| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Aug 14, 2008 Had this as part of a 4 beer sampler at the Rogue Public House in San Francisco while on vacation. Opaque brownish black color with a brown head. Wonderful aromas of dark chocolate and roasted coffee. Great contrast of flavors that begin sweet and finish quite bitter. JCastner (108), New York, USA
| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | Aug 14, 2008 Pours a dark chocolate black with a tan head. Aroma is of caramel, tootsie rolls (for you fellow Yanks) and maple syrup. Wonderful. Heavy body, almost syrupy. Taste is of course, dark chocolate, with coffee, and a surprising smoky thickness. Dry lingering bitterness from the perfect complement of cascade hops. Excellent stuff. What an American stout should be. NomDeBeer (400), Maryland, USA

But after a few sips, this one really grew on me. Excellent bitter-sweet combination. More flavorful and assertively bitter than Young’s Double Chocolate Stout but still very enjoyable.
Re-rate 8/29/08 = Black with a creamy, lasting tan head; picture perfect. Sweet chocolate flavor plus a bitter finish of hops, coffee, and roasted malt. Love the aroma; sweet milk chocolate and sticky molasses. Awesome. nctomatoman (9), Raleigh, NC, North Carolina, USA does not count | 4.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 10/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 5/5 | 18/20 | Aug 10, 2008 What can we say? We love this stuff. How can you beat a superb combination of great stout with a dose of dark chocolate? Rich, dark appearance, seductive nose that exudes chocolate, lush, intense but not heavy....just delicious.
