Commercial Description:
Dead Guy is a German-style Maibock made with Rogue's proprietary "PacMan" ale yeast. It is deep honey in color with a malty aroma, rich hearty flavor and a well balanced finish. Dead Guy is created from Northwest Harrington, Klages, Maier Munich and Carastan malts, along with Perle and Saaz Hops.
In the early 1990s Dead Guy Ale was created as a private tap sticker to celebrate the Mayan Day of the Dead (November 1st, All Souls Day) for Casa U Betcha in Portland, Oregon. The Dead Guy design proved popular and was incorporated into a bottled product a few years later with MaierBock as the elixir.

On tap. Pours an amber golden color with a medium sized frothy white head. Aroma is mostly caramel and toasty malts, not bad, basic toasty, lightly buttery and biscuit. Flavor is hoppier than expected, getting some bite out of hops along with the caramel and toffee notes. A bit of nuttiness in the finish along with toasty malts. Not much bitterness, just sort of fades. Medium body and biting carbonation. Pretty sessionable considering the higher alcohol.

Tap. Poured a clear deep amber with no head. Nose was malty and sweet. Light front with some malty sweetness in the finish. A bit bitter in the finish.

Pleasing hoppiness, with slight caramel notes. Nothing outstanding, but something I find myself returning to every now and then. Good beer.

Poured into a lager glass from a 650ml bottle. Less like a heller bock and more of a sweet APA. Aroma is malty with a lot of spice. Light, bitter nose with a hoppy but well balanced body. lots of bitterness and orange peel in the finish which lingers pleasantly. Overall very satisfying with a bite that leaves a lasting impression.

I have had this one a few times now and was surprised to see that I did not rate it. It has a nice balanced aroma of fruit, toffee, and hops. It also seemed a bit nutty. It has a nice amber color with an off white head. Sweet, candyish flavors are what I notice first, followed by caramel, berries, and a nice, spicy malt character. Its balanced well with moderate hopping and a nice lingering aftertaste.

12oz bottle. Pours a golden orange with a thin off white head with nice lacing. Aroma is very mild, mostly sweet maltiness. Taste is very malty to start, also some caramel in there, the middle is toasted malt, and the end reveals a bit of hop bitterness. Easy drinking and smooth, a well balanced beer. Very good.

I didn’t know this to be a maibock style .... I thought this was an APA geared towards the masses - some flavor, nothing special.
