Commercial Description:
JLS Release #34: Double Dead Guy ~ initially released in kegs for JLS accounts, this new elixir will be launched in 750 ml ceramic bottles in the spring of 2008! D2 (our nickname for Double Dead Guy) is a new reincarnation of Rogue's classic Dead Guy Ale. Mahogany in color, full bodied with an amazing mid-palette richness of toffee and caramel. The hops are evident also, with just enough to keep the maltiness in check. The finish lasts > 15 seconds!! D2 is Double the Fun! Malts: 2-row Pale, Munich, C15. Hops. Cascade for boil (because John was out pf Perle) and Crystal for aroma (because John was out of Sterling ...) IBU's approx 50-60. 19.8 Plato Original Gravity, 4.9 Plato Terminal Gravity.

Purchased ceramic bottle with no doubt what to expect. First impression is malted milk balls with a hint of citrus hops. Two finger head that vanished quickly with little lacing on the pint. Malty up front giving way to a nice hoppy finish with a lingering bitterness. Nice hazy pale copper colour and a velvet mouthfeel. As with every Rogue I’ve tried, I’ll buy it again.

On tap at Ray’s, into tulip. Poured a darker amber with a respectable beige head that barely laced. Aroma: thin hop backbone, lots of malt and alcohol really upfront. Same for the flavor. I found this too overpowering to be enjoyed a second time.

75 cl bottle at my garage-tasting May 8th. Amber color, fine beige head. Aroma is hops and malt, a bit fruit. Flavor is malty, sweet, dried fruit and has a lot of hoppy bitterness in the finish

Draft at the Nook. Amber/orange in the glass with a thin off-white head that settles out to a ring and had light lacing. Aromas of toasted malts and a light hop background. The flavor had some floral, pine, and a malt backing. Medium body with a light bitterness.

2009 bottle:
Pours clear dark amber wth a small-ish head. Sweet and malty toffee aroma. Thick and sweet palate. Sweet toffe flavour, hints of liquorice and pine needles. Sharp, alcohol bitter finish.

750ml Bottle. Pours dark amber with a yellowish head. Floral and fruity aroma. Tastes of oranges and a bit chocolate. Quite big body, well balanced.

Bottle. The mix of hops and dry fruits reminds me of a american barley wine/DIPA. Lacks in complexity.

Pours out as expected - small but thick light tan head that lives on the rim but gives lots of minute spotty lacing, clear deep amber with red hues. The aroma is mainly of apricots or peaches, some caramel & biscuit (which is covered up to a point by the fruity hops), and something that reminds me of a white, fluffy cake. The taste is pretty decent but, once again, just another hop laden beer - it gets old after awhile. There are some pine hops and some spicy or hot flavor that I should just attribute to the 9%. Goes down fairly smooth but I cannot get around the wallop of bitterness (yay!!!) which would be better without the overall thickness found in my glass. OK carbonation, ends with permanent bitterness which is totally enjoyable! A bit too much alcohol showing here.... but that might just be me trying to pretend that I just didn’t drink the entire bottle in 25 minutes. Very drinkable but, at least in this marketplace, highly overpriced. Being realistic, this is just another faceless beer with a wack of ingredients mixed together for the soul purpose of making an imperial version of something else. Bring on yet another day of the zombification of me at work.
