Commercial Description:
JLS Release #34: Double Dead Guy ~ initially released in kegs for JLS accounts, this new elixir will be launched in 750 ml ceramic bottles in the spring of 2008! D2 (our nickname for Double Dead Guy) is a new reincarnation of Rogue's classic Dead Guy Ale. Mahogany in color, full bodied with an amazing mid-palette richness of toffee and caramel. The hops are evident also, with just enough to keep the maltiness in check. The finish lasts > 15 seconds!! D2 is Double the Fun! Malts: 2-row Pale, Munich, C15. Hops. Cascade for boil (because John was out pf Perle) and Crystal for aroma (because John was out of Sterling ...) IBU's approx 50-60. 19.8 Plato Original Gravity, 4.9 Plato Terminal Gravity.

Aroma of floral and fruity notes with hops. Taste the same, with some alcohol notes in the ending. Nice

Red 750mL bottle. Poured near-clear ambery-orange with a short cap of off-white head. The aroma picked up honey, caramel, and darker fruity maltage accented by earthy and medicinal character.. the honey and fruity I got outta here made it almost malt likka-ey. The flavor had a somewhat cloying combination of honey, fruity notes, and alcohol that made it a little hard to drink.. spicy, earthy and medicinal notes showed again around the tongue.. bitterness really increased as it warmed up. Medium-plus bodied and bitter on the palate with a tacky texture at times.. spicy at the end, and it warmed up the belly. I don’t know what it was, but this didn’t strike a great chord with me.

Clear amber to orange body. Aroma of flowers combined with some malts. Lightly bitter flavour. Good balance. Ok complexity.

On cask for Firkin Fest at the Happy Gnome in St. Paul 09. Real smooth and creamy mouth-feel accompanied by fresh hops that blended in real well. I could drink this all day. I definitely didn’t know that this was so alcoholic. It was well hidden. Good brew.

Bottle at friend Heather’s. Honey amber with white head. Sweet floral nose with citrus hints. Flavor is sweet malty, fruits and sugar peek out. Snappy finish.

This thing definitely, improved with age. Deep amber-red color, lovely nose of cherries and grapefruits with the distinctive maltiness that regular Dead Guy has. Full bodied. Well balanced, fruity, with big malt backbone. Bitterness is somewhat restrained, with a long subdued bitter finish. Much more balance and complexity than the regular. High enjoyable.

Barrel aged for one year, on tap at Ushi Tora in Tokyo. Not bad but a bit too syrupy for my liking. Just a bit too bitter sweet. Seemed to taste notes of whisky? Perhaps from the aging process or was it aged in a whisky cask? didn’t care for that flavor. Not my favourite Rogue. Prefer the normal dead guy ale. It got better as I drank it but still wasn’t that easy to get through. Had it just after a Diamnd Knot IPA, so maybe that wasn’t fair.

Bottle; go read Dead Guy and add a bit more bitterness; I agree with Rustyham, go drink Dead Guy instead. (#63)
