Commercial Description:
JLS Release #34: Double Dead Guy ~ initially released in kegs for JLS accounts, this new elixir will be launched in 750 ml ceramic bottles in the spring of 2008! D2 (our nickname for Double Dead Guy) is a new reincarnation of Rogue's classic Dead Guy Ale. Mahogany in color, full bodied with an amazing mid-palette richness of toffee and caramel. The hops are evident also, with just enough to keep the maltiness in check. The finish lasts > 15 seconds!! D2 is Double the Fun! Malts: 2-row Pale, Munich, C15. Hops. Cascade for boil (because John was out pf Perle) and Crystal for aroma (because John was out of Sterling ...) IBU's approx 50-60. 19.8 Plato Original Gravity, 4.9 Plato Terminal Gravity.

750ml red painted bottle. 2008. Orange/amber in colour. Modest white head. Caramel malt aroma, faint fruitiness. Flavour is also largely relies on caramel malt, also some toffee. Some welcome citrus hop accents cut the sweetness. Grapefruit bitterness lingers for a while, slight grassy aftertaste. Medium body, light carbonation. Alcohol is hidden pretty well by the hops, but still shows a bit in the finish.

Pours an amber color with off-white head. Aroma is of caramel malts, hops, and a little alcohol. Flavor is similar with a decent alcohol warming on the finish.

In the bomber bottle. This is a very unbalanced beer. Huge painful bittering hops. The malt backbone is not thick enough to carry this beer. I wanted it to be the original DG before they screwed with the current recipe, but this falls short of the good old days. Instead, the double part is hops, not malt. Caramel and orange perfume water to the aroma. The thin dark beige head lingers atop a reddish brown beer. A disappointment.

2008 bottle. Poured into a snifter a dark amber color with a nice fluffy head. This beer had very good lacing. Malty smell and also sweet fruit and a hint of spice (pepper). A sweet caramel malt taste with a nice balance of citrus hops. Loved the slightly bitter finish. Thought this was much better than the Dead Guy.

Bomber, 2008. Dark orange pour reminiscent of stained wood. Aroma of booze, sweet fruits, and bread. Flavor very heavy on the roasted malt with a long lasting bitterness on the palate. I’m not really a fan of the American strong ale style, but I found this to be very accessible (as most Rogue beers are to people getting into micros). A much less complex beer compared to any of the stone bastard beers.

Draught at Stockholm Beer Festival 2008. Amber color. Toffeish, fruity and orangey aroma. Malty, toffeish, caramelly and fruity flavor with apricot and watermelon. Very rich, soft and drinkable.

I quite enjoy the regular dead guy and got to try the double with great enthusiasm. Unfortunately, the delicious and unexagerated honeyed toastiness of the dead guy is lost here, so are its generous floral hops. We do get a herbal hop twist towards the finish, but the nose is dominated by heavy cereals. The alcohol presence is strong all throughout. Bready and honey-like chewy malts and strong alcohol make for a beer that loses all of dead guy’s regular drinkability without gaining in complexity.

Basically very similar to Dead Guy Ale, but with a stronger hop presence. Not very hoppy itself, just in comparison to the normal Dead Guy. Overall, a little sweet, and strong malt flavor. I found it interesting, but I’m not loving it.
