Commercial Description:
JLS Release #34: Double Dead Guy ~ initially released in kegs for JLS accounts, this new elixir will be launched in 750 ml ceramic bottles in the spring of 2008! D2 (our nickname for Double Dead Guy) is a new reincarnation of Rogue's classic Dead Guy Ale. Mahogany in color, full bodied with an amazing mid-palette richness of toffee and caramel. The hops are evident also, with just enough to keep the maltiness in check. The finish lasts > 15 seconds!! D2 is Double the Fun! Malts: 2-row Pale, Munich, C15. Hops. Cascade for boil (because John was out pf Perle) and Crystal for aroma (because John was out of Sterling ...) IBU's approx 50-60. 19.8 Plato Original Gravity, 4.9 Plato Terminal Gravity.

Tap @ OTH. Pours amber/brown with beige head. Aroma is yeasty (barnyard) and malty. Taste had a significan amount of floral and piney hops close to an IPA. Light notes of caramel malts and the definite Rogue signature taste.

THOUGHTS: This beer is cursed. The first bottle I bout fell out of my car when I opened the door to bring it inside. I was so happy to see it didn’t break, then wanted to cry when I hear the hissing coming from the dented cap. the second bottle was placed in a bag without a bottom by a cashier, but luckily she noticed before anything bad happened. Then when I took it out of the bag on a shelf in my pantry to put it in the fridge, another beer in the bag toppled off the shelf and nearly broke. So, see, cursed. It reminded me a little of Arrogant Bastard, but not as intense. It hid the alcohol well. I liked it much more than Dead Guy. Bonus points for the bottle too. TECHNICAL: Bottle. Poured a clear, light to medium orangy amber with an average, off-white head that kept a thin sheet and left fair lacing. The aroma was nice but a little weak. It was moderate to heavy caramel and cereal; light to moderate grapefruit and orange hops; whit some brown sugar, candy sugar and a little fruitiness too. The initial flavor was moderately sweet and better, and lightly acidic; while the finish was moderately sweet, lightly acidic and heavy to harshly bitter with a long duration. There was caramel, brown sugar, grapefruit, orange and earthy hops. Nice balance. A little harsh at the beginning but the balance was better as it warmed. Also some metallic hops. The medium body was oily and also somewhat syrupy then dry with tingly carbonation and a dry, slightly metallic and ever so slightly alcoholic finish.

Fully clear reddish-amber; dirty amberish head. Dull old cookies nose, very bereft of hops. Ethanol’s there, however. Wry, just-not-bitter flavour, hinting at hops over cookies with a walnut peel hint. Ends on alcohol. Medium to well-bodied, slick; alcoholwarming. Especially for Rogue, dull. He’s really dead, this guy.

Bottle@Home, Dec 08, 3.2: As the previous rating was from a gathering I thought it was fair to re-rate. However, no improvements, I just dont dig this one. Jasmin, roses, broken young twigs and some citrus. Hazy, orange color, yellowish head, dirty lace. Sweet neutral start, flowers, finish very bitter, grapefruit, bit thinnish. Flavourful, but the grassy bitterness is too one dimensional. Bottle@LCRBM08, Oct 08, 3.4: Sweet malty aroma. Amber color, off-white head, good lace. Very sweet, very bitter, light grassy, toffee, raisin, light soapy in the finish. Sticky but light dry in the finish. I was expecting more from Rogue, this is just ok.

Bomber, 2008 vintage. Clear amber with a foamy tan head. Interesting nose - strong caramel, but with a grapefruit note that will not go quietly. Initially sweet, the caramel shines, and a bit of sweet cookie - almost maibock in nature. But look out - here come the hops... earthy and dry, citrus rind late. Big, full bodied, nice lace. A bit hot in the finish. Good, strong showing from Rogue.
