Nose is extremely hoppy (to be expected by the title), great taste... not a bad beer!

12oz bottle from Wine Warehouse in Charlottesville, VA. Pours rich amber color with cream colored head. Deep slightly sweet aroma with chocolate, molasses and bread notes and some hoppy tones. Flavor is smooth and pleasant, smoky, some more molasses but a little bit thin. Finish is excellent, almost like a stout with some of the peaty notes of a porter and a nice fresh hop bite. Overall an enjoyable atypical amber, quite intense for a beer that is only 5.2% abv.

65cl bottle from GBBF 09. Red copper colour clear and thickish beige head. Typical sweet big hop aroma of a Rogue beer. But you know what? I love Rogue. Yes they probably aren’t the best beers in the world, yes subtlety and balance go out of the window and they get a bit sickly towards the end of the bottle, but they are damned good fun. Yes a bit stale and oxidised, but big sweet hops all over it. I rather liked it and the big sweet hops are funny

Pour is very nice for a red with a lightly hazy, coppery-amber color and an average, yellowish, pillowy, frothy head which is somewhat lasting and leaves some sporadic, drippy lace. Nose is pleasant with a notable caramel backbone, freshly-baked biscuits, a lot of fresh sprucey notes, and tangerine, maybe a bit of dried apricot and smoke in there too. Flavor is similar but more bitter and less sweet than I would have thought. The malts are lightly roasted, hints of smoke, biscuity, and hinting at some dry caramels while the hops bring rustic notes, some sprucey/piney notes, and just light tangerine and grapefruit peel notes. The moderately high bitterness is mostly from the dry hopping but a little from the roasted malts. Palate is moderately light, lively, and oily, drying a bit into the finish. The finish is mostly bitter with some lingering smoke, lots of rustic and spruce, and hints at grapefruit peel. A very intense amber, more of an over-hopped red (like the title says). Very drinkable and quenching but certainly not your average amber/pale. Very good from Rogue.

Bottle 0,355 l. Dark copper, smallish beige head. Nose has some hoppiness, citrus maybe, chocolate, dark fruits and maybe some smokiness. Flavor is dryish, some malts, chocolatey in a subtle way. Nice dry bitterness. Very good, one of the best amber ales, but it’s not an amber ale afterall.

Poured an almost clear dark copper color with a fizzy, off-white head and average lacing. Tons of grassy hops in the aroma. Some light citrus came out as well. The flavor was dry, earthy and grassy hops with light citrus sweetness. Thin bodied with a lingering mouthfeel. Overall it was one-dimensional and became tiresome.

355 ml bottle. Clear amber with a big off-white head. Aroma totally dominated by hops. Flavor associate with IPA but not bitter enough. Light malty flavor with bread, pine and citrus. Long, hopp fruity finish. Easy drinkable and well balanced refresher.
