Aroma and flavor of roasted barley. Honey sweetness and nut notes. A characteristic milky profile JohnQPublic (387), Brooklyn, New York, USA Apr 29, 2008 Bomber, into Sam Adams lager glass. Pours Pours a hazy dark brown, with a small tan head that doesn’t last long. Aroma is roasted hazelnut, chocolate. Taste starts off with hazelnut, very roasty, nutty, finishing bitter with deeply roasted hazelnut and flavors of dark bread crust, slightly bitter. Mouthfeel is highly carbonated, moderate body, not quite watery but not full either. Perm (151), Tryon, North Carolina, USA Apr 28, 2008 On-tap at the Flying Saucer, Raleigh, NC.
Our table was fairly evenly divided over this one -- either loved it or hated it. I gave it a robust "Good Lord!" upon first sip. It definitely drinks stronger than the 6.22% ABV that it is. Flirts with the possibility of being too sweet, but the folks at Rogue yet again pull off something that otherwise shouldn’t really work. partyninja (17), Portland, Oregon, USA Apr 27, 2008 Not usually a flavored beer fan, but this is quality stuff. Dee-licious! Even better when used to make the bread at Rogue’s restaurants. Lothore (276), California, USA Apr 27, 2008 Pours a deep brown with hints of caramel coloring. There is very little fizzy head that dissipates quickly. Smell is very sweet with a nutty and toffee edge. The taste is different than the smell lets on. Sweet, as was expected, but there is a strong nutty taste that hits from the second the brew touches your lips. It finishes very smooth and slightly bitter leaving hints of hazelnut taste on the pallet. It is carbonated fairly highly and I personally think this takes away from the mouthfeel. I would have enjoyed this style more with less carbonation but regardless, it was thick and smooth. This is a great beer to enjoy as a desert or to taste but I couldn’t see myself drinking more than a glass or two in a sitting. Regardless it was a delicious brew that i thoroughly enjoyed.
Surly (19), Michigan, USA Apr 27, 2008 Rich dark brown, enormous head. Scents of wood, sugar, caramel, nut and significant malt. Very smooth and refreshing. Vas19 (292), Maryland, USA Apr 25, 2008 Pours dark red-brown with a yellow head. Aroma is nuts, honey, and toast. Nice initial sugary sweetness with a strong nutty flavor on the finish. Not a huge fan of the nutty flavor, but it’s an ok beer overall. DocHop (278), Baltimore, Maryland, USA Apr 24, 2008 Pours a medium rust colored brown with an inch of tan head. Very nutty aroma, almost a glazed sweetness with some lightly roasted notes. Initial taste is a very satisfying sweet nutty flavor. Flavor almost subsides in the middle to a few dry hops but then picks up with some hints of honey to a lingering tangy sweetness that is really nice. Body is smooth and refreshing for a brown.
