Absolutely zero head on this one by the time it got to me, but I’m not much of a stickler for the appearance category unless it looks like piss. Aroma started off sort of juicy, grape-ish. A little later it reminded distinctly of strawberry-rhubarb pie, fruits and delectable, buttery crust included. This doughy, buttery pie-crustiness continued throughout the flavor with the fruits/general malty sweetness sort of switching off from time to time. I honestly don’t think I would be able to identify hazelnut if given a blind sampling of it, so maybe that turned into this pie crust I keep talking about. In any event, I thought this was very unique, and very nice if you’re in the mood for some smooth sweetness.8-4-8-4-16/4.0
Rerate 9/16/08. Interesting. Was I served the wrong beer the first time? Was it just way too cold as all tap beers from that location are? Was I just an idiot? Hard to say, but my goodness, there are hazelnuts here, fresh, nature-filled, fleshy hazelnuts comprise the majority of the aroma. I could make arguments for some earth and a touch of spice, but really it’s all from the nuts. Flavor not quite as nutty, but a general nuttiness still plays a prominent role with some chocolatey notes and semi-roasted sweet malt coming through more. Finish actually goes back to that huge hazelnut though, right back where you started. Very tasty and uniquely nutty in my experience. dpjuart (670), Indiana, Pennsylvania, USA Mar 17, 2008 3/8/08 - On tap at Ginger Man in Dallas. Pours brown with amber hues. Nose is hazelnut and caramel and some some nut. Hazelnut and chocolate. Little bit of hops. Tasty, but a bit overpowering. GuinnessGal (59), Virginia, USA Mar 16, 2008 Great brown ale. Deep brown color with a lasting head. Smooth on the palate, with a nice nutty, malt flavor. Another tasty beer by Rogue in a fun bottle! MoDog (909), Griffith, Indiana, USA Mar 13, 2008 Poured from a 22oz bomber and served in a Bell’s dimpled mug. This beer poured a dark mahogany brown with a thick head of tan foam that lasted awhile. The aroma of the beer was made up of roasted malt, nuts, and caramelized sugar. The flavor consisted of sweet, roasted malts, cereal, mild chocolate, and some sweet hazelnut notes. The mouthfeel was light to medium-bodied and a bit thin and watery. A bit too sweet for the style by my tastes. A pretty average beer. Codythegreat (133), Carrollton, Georgia, USA Mar 12, 2008 Pours a very dark brown colour with a light tan head that dissipates faster than I can write this scentence. Smells nutty. I like that. Tastes a lot like Hazelnut which is not a good thing but a great thing! Ha ha. Probably the best brown ale I’ve ever had. Rogue never fails to impress. Such a great brewer. I drank this out of a Tumbler. ShKincaid (9), Pennsylvania, USA does not count Mar 9, 2008 22oz bottle pours smooth with a dark brown color adn tan head. Wonderful aroma of chocolate and hazelnut coffe. Fantastic malty nut taste. This is one of the best brown ales ever. illidurit (851), Santa Cruz, California, USA Mar 9, 2008 Review from notes. Poured into my Rogue pint glass. Dark brown body with a beige head. The aroma has an obvious hazelnut note drifting above sweet and roasty malt. Flavor is much the same, with roasted barley and chocolate setting the foundation for a rich nuttiness that is thankfully not overpowering. Dry finish, smooth on the palate. Really easy to drink. RomanW70 (297), Providence, Rhode Island, USA Mar 5, 2008 Pours dark brown with a consistent one finger head. Aroma of toffee, chocolate, brown sugar, and hazelnuts. Smooth tatse of sweet malts through hazelnuts to a light bittersweet finish. Very solid beer.
