Scents included puffed wheat, cocoa, caramel, corn flakes and of coarse hazelnuts. First taste was quite hazelnutty with a quick bite from the carbonation, maybe a little too fizzy. The finish though is smooth and creamy with a little hop after the nut flavor. Palate ends with a light bitter taste while the hazelnut continues... Pours hazy brown, slight amber twinge. Thin brown head that disappears quickly. Aroma is a bit lacking and hard to find. Flavor delivers exactly what I hoped! Great carbonation and smooth mouthfeel, good sweet malt and hop that reminds me of Christmas in Germany... (It seems hazelnut is in everything christmas and not too much sweetness). Really hits the nuttiness on the head. Has a certain buttery creaminess that is very reminiscent of eating nuts and how the fat from the nuts coats one’s palate. Pours a dark, translucent red-brown color with an off-white head that faded at a reasonable pace and showed plenty of lacing. Aroma was moderate in strength with rich spices of cloves, cinnamon and anise. The flavor featured black licorice, roasted oats, malts and burnt toast. The mouthfeel starts a bit thin but builds to a nice creamy climax--very full and satisfying. Overall this is a great beer. A quick chocolate taste at first, definitely has a malty and nutty character as well, can taste the alcohol a little bit, too. Also, there was a little bit of a coffee aftertaste. This beer went down smoother that I expected... it looked heavier than it felt in the mouth.
