Myfathersson (2), Wyoming, Michigan, USA does not count Jul 16, 2007 I really had high hopes for this beer as it scored so highly in everything I have read about it. Unfortunately this was a huge disappointment.
When I saw it looked like root beer in the glass I should have stopped there. The nose is nutty with a strong malt component. Feels thin and over carbonated in the mouth. The flavor coats your tongue in nuttiness and finishes strongly with a *blech* factor.
I will admit that I am a hop-head, and I was hard-pressed to find anything nice to say about this beer. This one is definitely NOT for the hop lover. Mutualaid (136), Texas, USA Jul 15, 2007 Pours dark brown (surprise) with a rich beige head. Aromas of caramel and banana nut bread with a bit of a floral hop bouquet. This beer needs to be consumed a bit warmer than most, I think. Good nutty honey-like flavor; hops really make themselves known in the flavor. Less body than I expected, but not a problem. Finishes smooth. thenick (742), North Bellmore, New York, USA Jul 15, 2007 Updated: Jul 16, 2007Pours a clear brown with a tan head. Aroma is an enticing mix of hazelnut and vanilla. However, this beer completely falls apart upon tasting. It has the consistency of seltzer water, and the taste, which is a nice hazelnut in the beginning, goes absolutely nowhere afterward. A total disappointment; I felt like I was drinking nutty soda. LinusStick (1830), Moon Twp, suburb of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA Jul 14, 2007 Not a great brown ale; why did this score so high? Pour was a nice deep brown with a little one finger off white head. Aroma of malt and not much else. Flavor was caramel and some nuts...roasted malt mostly, though. Caramel in the afftertaste. Medium carbonation.Average. kopher (294), New York, USA Jul 14, 2007 Very nutty aroma, with roasty malt and chocolate. Flavor is a bit more mild, mostly malt and a bit of caramel, but tons of hazelnut in the finish. Good medium body and carbonation, slightly oily. mar (1740), Rowlett, Texas, USA Jul 13, 2007 first beer i had of the night. i was very impressed with this compared to the others i had. cbeers21 (563), Miami, Florida, USA Jul 10, 2007 Pours oily-textured clear dark brown into the glass with a pillowy off white head. The smell is fantastic, with a variety of choclatey malts. Hazelnut is promenent (no surprise) but there were an array of lightly toasted malts, chocolate, almond, even peanut butter. The flavor features hazelnut up front, but evolves toasted almond, chocolate flavors and finishes with a dry twinge which has echoes of mocha coffe and smoke. The malts are well balanced by omnipotent hoppy kicks throughout the taste. This is a good brown ale.
