Head dicepates to a film. This beer is all malt. A nutty bite, with slight cocoa aspects and a long lasting flavor. This beer is pleasant and smooth, but it’s thin and one-dimensional. It’s missing something that I can’t quite figure out, however, it’s close to being a good one. Gusler (2655), Tucson, Arizona, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | Dec 21, 2001 Updated: Dec 28, 2003The beer disembogues a transpicuous deep ruby color with a Bunyanesque sized head that is spumescent in texture and a beauteous tan color, as it ever so slowly transmogrifies the lace forms a thick and glutinous sheet to meld with the glass. A sweet nutlike malted aroma dominates hints of vanilla, quite fresh and clean, start quite sweet with the top a bit thin for my liking. Finish is moderate in carbonation with the hop personable in their spicy bite, quite dry with a lingering bittersweet flavor, drinkable as all Rogue beers are, but certainly not their best “Whatever” the name. | 3.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 2/5 | 13/20 | Jul 30, 2002 Rerated with clean palate... Excellent presentation, deep ruby brown, padded creamy head. Nutty (obviously) slightly sulphurous aroma. Very smooth hazelnut flavor. Needs to be thickened up for a better palate. I had to ding it on palate, and deduct 1 aroma point for sulphur, and one appearance point for the purple hippie. puzzl (2649), New York, New York, USA
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 16/20 | Nov 4, 2005 Hazelnut dominates the aroma and its awesome. Very smooth, buttery, lots of hazelnut in the flavor, well rounded and robust with a touch of hops. A very nice brown, and very different and distinct. 5000 (2634), Hardened Liver, Washington, USA
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Aug 11, 2005 Bottle: Ruby brown, large foamy light beige head, very nice lacing, very light carbonation.   Grainy/nutty nose, moreso on the side of nutty, with a huge honey and even moreso Honeycomb cereal aroma.   Totally Honeycomb cereal like... DAMN!   Seems a touch too sweet for my taste, at least on the nose.   Quite sweet on the tongue, honey, malty, but quite smooth to say the least.   Big body, honeycomb cereal dominates, with a rather smooth mouthfeel.   Finishes rather sweet, malty, with loads of honey and even graham crackers.   Very slight chocolate malt profile throughout.   Good, very drinkable, but basically too sweet for my tastes.

Clear, dark ruby brown body with a quick foamy light tan head. Roasted nutty vanilla malt flavour. Medium body. Very nice and nutty. tupalev (2618), Waterloo, Ontario, Canada
| 4.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | Oct 29, 2004 Updated: Nov 29, 2005Bottle. Wonderful dark brown body. Subtle nuttiness in malty aroma. Medium tan head. Mouthfeel is on the thin side, but silky as well - a beautiful blend of maltiness and nutty flavour. Not much hop presence until the end. And then after that, you really get the hazelnut after you’ve put your glass down and contemplated. I really enjoyed this brown ale - a little more body and it would be perfect for the style.
Had this at the Rogue pub in San Franciso in November 05 and loved it even more - it seemed to have much more body and was bursting with flavour - easily the best brown ale I have ever had and even better than the 4.1 bottle I originally rated. Bumped up marks for aroma, flavour and overall by 1 each.
