I used to really like this. Maybe it was because one version of it has Iron Chef’s Miromoto on the bottle. Image is everything! Otherwise, a decent brown.

22oz bottle sampled at the Rogue tasting at Blacklick Wine & Spirits. Pours dark brown with an off-white head. Aroma of sweet malt and hazelnuts. Flavor is creamy hazelnut up front with a light hop finish. Still one of the better brown ales I’ve had.

Bottle. Clear, dark red/brown color with a small tan head. Nutty, toasted malt aroma. Slightly sweet malt flavor initially that dries considerably on the finish. Hints of nuts, butter and hops on the finish. Very drinkable, but not a style I’m crazy about.

From a bottle into a snifter. Beer pours a clear, dark, amber-brown color with a small, frothy, white, mostly diminishing head. The aroma is quite tasty: The hazelnut aroma is in the spot light, backed with heavily malty notes of roasted grain, chocolate, chocolate syrup, coffee and a light note of caramel; lightly hoppy with a note of herbs and pine with faint yeasty notes of cobwebs. Smells like a Rogue—neat. :) The flavor is heavily sweet, moderately bitter with an average-length, moderately sweet, moderately acidic, lightly bitter finish. Dessert-like retronasals of Hershy’s syrup. The body is medium-to-full, the texture is water-to-velvety with lively carbonation.

The idea of a hazelnut brown ale is not very appealing to me, so this threw me for a loop in that it’s actually pretty damn good. Hoppy brown ale and the nuts come through quite nicely. Some chocolate as well, so it has a bit of a Nutella thing going on. I’d venture this is one of the better brown ales out there. Nice take on a not-so-exciting style.

Bottle (Morimoto)5/3/04: Pours with an average kaki colored head that quickly diminishes. Aroma: nutty, malty, sweet maple/hazlenut, maybe even some toffee here. Flavor: Wow, I haven’t tasted this before. Hazelnut, carmel, butter, sweet, but also with a slight hop bitterness. Nicely balanced. Finishes malty with a toffee/hazelnut aftertaste. Excellent beer.
