Nutty aroma. Could be hazelnut. Deep reddish amber color with a beige head that hung around. Full mouthfeel. It really does taste like hazelnuts. Then some chocolate and dark toasted malt aspects appear. Hard to say that there is much hop to balance the malt, but it’s a dry finish, and it’s interesting.

Another excellent Rogue beer. The head went away quickly. Very impressive with vanilla, butterscotch and orange in the aroma. There was also vanilla and malt in the flavor. Interesting.

Chocolate, nutty aroma. Deep thick mahogany body with good clarity and thin tan head that recedes to cover. Chocolatey, nutty, cocoa-like flavour. Incredible mouthfeel and lasting cocoa aftertaste. A bit sweet at first sip but the flavour really grows. Mouthfeel is creamy smooth with lively carbonation on the tongue. Unfortunately, the carbonation dies fairly quickly (+/- 10 mins) and it becomes a bit sticky. Medium body. Bottle.

Dark brown hue with good tan head and some lacing. Yep, there is hazelnut here but also detected coffee, chocolate, cherry, and cookie dough. Nice sweet and tart balance, some fresh hops show in the finish. Most of the aroma showed up on the palate, nice. A bit thin mouthfeel. A very nice brew indeed, shows all the characteristics I look for in a brown ale, plus a little bit more. The best brown I have ever tasted, edgeing out Samuel Smith and Bells. Highly recommended.

Bottle at Toms Ultimate Glasgow Tasting ... Yeasty malty with load and loads of Hazelnuts (i was told it was nut brown , so clearly identifable hazelnuts without knowing) little bit bitter in linger for my liking but still wonderfully rounded.

May, 2003: Big pint bottle. Newcastle Brown with some hazlenut syrup. Pleasant enough, but not a great beer. These Rogue’s have a reputation for being great beers - so far they have merely been acceptable. I’m surprised that so many people I respect are giving this such praise. Obviously I’m missing something. OK - attractive hazlenut colour, check. Slight raison and hazlenut aroma, check. Mouthfeel - light medium with small carbonation, check. Nothing special so far. Flavour dominated by a sort of hazlenut syrup with touches of vanilla and caramel, behind which - and not exactly well integrated - is a sort of nutty, rusty beer with some traces of hop bitterness that warms in the finish, but is marred by a metallic quality and a chemical hazlenut. Some chocolate late in the finish. A clumsy journey full of faults. Try as I might, I can’t see this as even a good beer.

Deep brown pour with a thin creamy head. Hazelnut powered the aroma, followed by some vanilla, sweet malts, and toffee. Hazelnut, brown sugar, and vanilla provided much of the flavor. There was a hint of chocolate. Very smooth mouthfeel and long hazelnut finish... almost like I had just finished a cold cappuccino (but in a good way).
