t4h2c0 (65), seattle, USA Oct 8, 2007 good the first few times and every once in a while but not strong enough and too expensive
borgination (101), Lee, Massachusetts, USA Oct 12, 2008 I think that this one is way overrated. It has way to much of a coffee taste to it. It pours a nice dark brown with a tan head. Very sweet and smooth taste to it, i just think that the hazelnut is way to powerful. brianprentiss (397), Mountain View, California, USA Oct 11, 2008 Lots of toasty malt, lots of hazelnut. Very interesting, very sweet beer. Really enjoyed this one; it is very memorable. yumyum (59), barrie, Ontario, Canada Oct 8, 2008 I have only tried a few "nut brown ales" and this one is the nuttiest. It is a good beer with a strong nuty flavour than gets more prominent as you drink it. As I drank it I noticed slight chocolate flavour develop also It has a nice smooth mouthfeel. OVerall it is not something to jump up and down over but I think it is a beer that is true to its style and is quite tastey. kiefdog (482), Tampa, Florida, USA Oct 7, 2008 65cl bottle from Village Wine and Spirits (Tampa, FL). Pours a dark mahogany with a two finger tan head. Good retention and lacing of the glass. Aroma is sweet malt, nuts, spice, and maybe a faint hint of chocolate. Flavor is much of the same: sweet malt (with hints of roasted barley), chocolate, sweet caramel, nuts and spice, Generally medium body with a slightly bitter finish. Beer Snob (356), Ontario, Canada Oct 6, 2008 Oh this is great. Mahogany with a beige head. Scent of hazelnuts and a bit of chocolate - nice, and not overpowering.
Flavour is wonderfully balanced between bitter hoppiness and nutty sweetness. Smooth and not sticky sweet. Aftertaste is of hazelnut that gives way to a clean hoppiness.
Balance is the ideal word here - a perfect balance between sweet and bitter. One 650 millilitre bottle was enough, but that is not to infer that this ale is too sweet.
I am heading off to buy a dozen of the big bottles. An ale this good should be stocked up on.
