Commercial Description:
Deserving the title "Emperor of Ales" (unlike the bourgeois "King of Beers"), Imperial is the strongest and fullest of all stouts. Imperials originally were brewed with large quantities of hops and a high alcohol content to withstand long, unrefrigerated journeys. Rogue Imperial Stout, considered the high end of stouts, is made of 2-row Great Western Harrington & Klages, Hugh Baird XLT-80, Black, Munich and Chocolate Malts; Willamette, Cascade and Chinook hops; rolled oats; and two secret ingredients. Unfiltered and unfined, Imperial Stout is best when aged for one year. Imperial Stout is available in a new 12-ounce bottle (replacing the older 7-ounce XS-line package) and on draft.
Measurements: 26 degrees Plato, IBU 87.5, Apparent Attenuation 77, Lovibond 258

A black beer with a disappearing brown head. The aroma is sweet with notes of coffee, chocolate, as well as roasted malt. The flavor is sweet with notes of coffee and chocolate, as well as light touches of the alcohol. The mouthfeel is smooth, yet the alcohol prickles the tongue. Nice one.

Bottled (2001 edition). Once the ketchup effect let me shake the beer out of the bottle it comes out black hole black with near black head. Licorice and coffee aroma. It has chocolate mousse mouthfeel andtastes like molasses. Still it’s dry and very salty, has some grapepfruit hoppiness to it, and manages to stay at least decently balanced, despite a bitterness that must be way over 50 IBUs. This beer is HUGE!, and also really good.

(Bottle 35, 5 cl) Pours a tar like opaque blackness with a creamy, light brown head. Burned, caramelish aroma. Markedly full-bodied with toasted malts and a distinct burned, malty finish. A huge beer. 270106 and 240307

This is one big mamma jamma. Though hugely robust, with an overload of hop bitterness and roasty flavours, it retains a high degree of drinkability. A great showpiece not only for the Rogue motto of ’when in doubt, add more hops’ but also an excellent showpiece for Mr. Maier’s underrated mashing and malt selection, not to mention the understated complexity of the house yeast.
