Commercial Description:
McRogue Scotch Ale is a hearty Scotch Ale, not to be mistaken for its cousin, Scottish Ale, which are lighter in color and body. McRogue is more scotch than ale. Deep copper in color, caramel aroma, rich malty flavor with a roasted malt background. This elixir was debuted at the 1995 Oregon Brewers Festival. McRouge is brewed with Great Western Harrington, Klages, Beeston floor-malted Amber, Pale Chocolate and pale Weymann Caramunich Malts, and rolled oats. Willamette and Kent Goldings Hops.
Measurements: 17.5 degrees Plato, IBU 45, Apparent Attenuation 77, Lovibond 28.6.

1995 nip bottle. Poured perfectly-still garnety-amber with absolutely zero head. The aroma picked up rich sherry, dark chocolates, and molasses.. semi-sweet and a little smoky.. I really dug the nose. The flavor found more molasses, caramel, and chocolates at the core, with touches of smoke and vanilla around.. toasty malts on the back-end with some prickly alcohol warmth.. medium-length finish showed a little oxidation. Medium-bodied at most on the palate and lifeless.. slick feel that probably lost a little body and added a touch of cardboard with age.. the roast was there and the malts were a good blend, but it lost some feel. This held up fairly well, and I’d buy some if they made it again (but not in the 750mL ceramics).

Undated notes: Dark brown and off white head. Roasty, sweet, caramel, some oaky hints, smoky aroma and flavor. Full bodied.

7oz bottle. 1995 vintage. Heaven only knows why I saved this one so long. Smelled of molasses, dark fruit, and leather. Poured a clear dark orange color without any head. An ancient film of yeast lay at the bottom of the bottle. Light to medium bodied and sweet without any significant carbonation (13 years of entropy at work). Caramel, toffee, raisin, and nut flavors were accompanied by a hint of smoked malt. Interesting.

Stud tasting 1.0 held at general_gaos. Thanks for putting up with us colin! 1995 vintage. Who the hell keeps something like this around for 13 year. Ha! Sorry colin. Pours murky brown with no head. Aroma is roasted almonds, smoke, chocolate, and toffee. Flavor has more of the same with some tobacco. Watery finish, no carbonation.

Thanks to beastiefan2k for sharing a wee nip of this gem from 1996. While he wasn’t a fan of this bad boy, I was. Deep rich brown colour, low carbonation and a very rich plummy malt aroma with rum and raisins throughout. Some sweet milk chocolate as well. Definitely showing its age, with lots of sherryish oxidation, toasted nuts and a rich cocoa/coffeeish finish. I think it’s held up pretty well.

Vintage 1998: Perhaps one of the best Scotch Ales I have ever had the pleasure of trying. Zero head on this one and hardly any carbonation. The beer poured a murky brown and I tasted hints of chocolate, caramel, and a very balanced maltiness. An outstanding beer and a great vintage.

7 oz nip bottle acquired in a trade Vintage 1996! (Sorry don’t remember from who either Matt or Larry) 9/6/07: Roasted chestnut brown body w/ zero head, not a lick! Ruby highlights & alcohol legs. Papery and sherry oxidation up front as to be expected from a 10/11 year old beer! Bready malt and a bit of rubbery yeast, and a moderately deep caramel aroma still present. Also it had developed an over ripe dark cherry fruitiness and had some hints of dark chocolate. Not at all un pleasant, but not necessarily resembling a scotch ale either! The caramel is heavy on the palate, but not cloying, and I think that age has also helped it develope some tartness, which probably also helped it dry out! Bready malt flavor throughout but toned down. Finish has a bit of roasted character and chocolate. The palate was much cleaner than the aroma. Not a bit of carbonation! Medium body, and warming alcohol! Not bad for an 11 year old beer! A bit flat but still full of character!
