madquacker (705), Canberra ACT, Australia Nov 6, 2009 Decent black beer with soft coffee aromas with a fair amount of sweetness. That siad have had plenty better in this style. MrPickles (106), Wisconsin, USA Nov 5, 2009 12oz bottle. Dark brown in color with small tan head. Aroma is not what I thought. All the normal smells of a nice porter, but I got none of the mocha. Flavor was the same. Nice porter that was very rich and smooth, but again nothing really on the mocha/coffee flavor. matthewjk (42), Cincinnati, Ohio, USA Nov 4, 2009 This is a nice porter, but not as good as I would suspect--being from Rogue. More bitter than sweet. Chocolate finish not very detectable. KyotoLefty (1370), Kyoto, Japan Nov 3, 2009 Bottle.
Pitch black with lace. Aroma of coffee, liquorice, some dark fruit, hops.
Flavor includes some chocolate as well as those. Woody, hoppy, very bitter finish. Interesting and flavorful.
DeadGirl (186), West Palm Beach, Florida, USA Nov 2, 2009 On draught at Yard House (West Palm, FL): Bitter chocolate and roasted toast (like that makes any sense). Anyway, I expected more complexity from Rogue. Drinkability: Thin chocolate however satisfying. Rebuy: Yes. #183 on 02112009, DG. waltersrj (14), Washington, USA Nov 2, 2009 Poured a deep black with minimal amounts of an off-tan head. Nose is chocolate, and a decent amount of coffee. Taste is much the same with an added hint of roasted malts, and a somewhat piney aftertaste. The coffee also lingers on the tongue. This is an oily palette lingerer. Pretty decent beer. ditch (8), Dale City, Virginia, USA does not count Nov 1, 2009 Poured a nearly impenetrable black with a thick 2 finger head of a caramel color. Nice lacing on the glass. Head hangs for the duration.
Smells of chocolate and only a slight hint of coffee. Also a bit smokey. You can almost smell the dryness.
Taste is sweet and chocolaty. Bitterness of coffee and pine in the finish. Definitely charred malts. Very dry finish. Kinda watered down a bit.
Mouthfeel is weak. Carbonation is light. Maybe could have used a bit more time on the shelf?
Drinkability is pretty good. I could definitely make this a session drinker if it was being served all night. Although I would not choose this on purpose.
I’m a bit disappointed with this one. I will try it again to see if I just got a bad bottle. No bottled on or best enjoyed by date to be found. I’m a fan of Rogue beers so I will actively see this beer to compare in the future. CUJO (339), Brooklyn, New York, USA Oct 31, 2009 RnH: Pours like a porter! (what did you expect?!) Looks like an opaque cola, pour left a very thin brown head. Nose is smokey and cooked, roasted malts, coffee, bitters... the taste is much of the same. Nothing unexpected here yet a very solid brew for the style.
