| 2.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/20 | Jan 24, 2002 1997 bottling, drunk on 1/23/02. Definitly mellowed with the age. Some nice toffee and molasses flavors in the malt. The hops had faded quite a bit. No hop aroma and the bitterness was a bit harsher than I expected. Maybe some of the smoother alpha acids deteriorate faster than the grittier tasting ones.
Some oxidation was present, but not bad considering it was a five year old bottle.
Alcohol flavor was present but not overwhelming.
Overall, I’d expected more malt and complexity for this big a beer after five years. A good beer, but it didn’t make me want to break open the ’99.

Pours red-brown amber with an off-white head. nose is caramel, toffee, brown sugar, and a slight bitterness. Flavor is the same caramel, toffee, bitterness, and and kind of tang from the yeast. Interesting barleywine that has aged ok. BarossaLuke (113), Australia

I believe this is my first American Barley Wine and if this beer is anything to go by, I want more!! Intense aroma of sweet malt, glycerin, citrus hops with some resiny characters. Palate is amazingly well balanced considering the 100+ IBUs in there. Lovely malt flavour, very complex, the hop flavour is simply awesome. What a fantastic beer, but not for the faint hearted on uninitiated. Most people I know would’nt be able to handle this beer, which is good means I have less to share. curly (759), Nashville, Tennessee, USA

Pours a thick, opaque mahogany with a cherry edge. Rich malt, prunes, raisins, caramel fudge cake in the nose. Mouth is flat but thick and viscous. Touch of oxidation. Bold, rich flavors with banana nut cake, dark fruits, and toffee. Very nice. Would have been stellar with bubbles.
