Rciesla (3509), Exit 15W, New Jersey, USA Nov 6, 2009 Bottle. Pours a brune body with an off white head. Vinegar, woody lactic acid toned, with a balsamic note. Sharp acidic finish and a full body. Tannin cherry and oak. Nice. Dickinsonbeer (3434), Hoboken, New Jersey, USA Nov 1, 2009 1 liter shared by Kan! Pours a medium to deep amber/reddish and a thin fading head. Aroma is a nice acetic, but not overdone- Flemish red- acetic, slight ketchup, cherry pit, toasted french oak, slight tannic wine and vinous. Flavor is clean, yet complex, not too acetic, just perfect vinegar character, no harsh or off solvent or phenols, nice cherry pitty, woody, tannic, wine-like, good body and tannin and acid backbone. Modest to high acidity in the end, but not overly sour. Wow very impressed with the overall quality and restraint in this Flemish Red. Great! j12601 (1151), Poughkeepsie, New York, USA Oct 31, 2009 Bottle at Paul’s place for Kan’s visit, pretty sure this was brought by Kan. Pours a clear tawny brown amber with a thin white head. Light fruit and sour notes, vinegar. Light bitterness, slight nuttiness. pantanap (1323), Chicago, Illinois, USA Oct 30, 2009 1 liter bottle. Thanks again to Todd for sending our way.... Pours a dark amber reddish brown with a thin head... Aroma of tart sour Cherry and oak. Pretty solid overall ... Tart sour cherry and oak, perhaps a little green and vegetable that eventually opens up to some sweetness. Pretty drinkable overall and nice. (Rating #2702) MartinT (5030), Montreal, Quebec, Canada Oct 12, 2009 My Bottom Line:
This Flemish-style Sour Ale pleases with its vinous connotations roaming within dominant yeasty wilderness, before light caramel and judicious tartness seal every sip.
Further Personal Perceptions:
-A veil of foam skirts the dark red.
-The flavor profile is quite funky, but the tartness is restrained, which should make the beer more approachable to some.
-The fruit character is also redolent of sour cherries, though not as bright as a Cascade Kriek for example, which uses actual sour cherries.
-This is very expensive, but when a brew is this well rendered, I don’t mind a steeper price tag.
-The body is healthy, although I’d prefer more firmness.
Bottle. miketd (679), Cleveland, Ohio, USA Sep 15, 2009 Bottle from hannont. Pours dark with a small white head. Aroma of tart fruit and oak. Has an oak and tart fruit without being over the top sour. Medium palate and pretty easy to drink. Brigadier (1220), Chagrin Falls, Ohio, USA Sep 5, 2009 Bottle at miketd’s
Thanks to Mike for bringing this back from the West Coast. I am not familiar with Roots but this is one that perhaps should get some buzz. While not the most over the top sour ale it is solid and worth getting your hands on if you have the ability.
Aroma / Appearance - The reddish brown body presented a nice outward appearance. Tart cherries blended into the chocolate brownie base to form a dessert like concoction which left the senses wanting more.
Flavor / Palate - Cherry crumble filled the mouth with a wonderfully sweet and tart sensation. Ceding to a warmth likely from the 9% ABV it was as smooth as you would expect a well balanced product to be. I would love to try it again with a pure palate as I suspect my score would improve.
