Commercial Description:
This is exquisite ale made with a blend of wild and domestic yeast strains. Brewed two years ago, 3/4 of this beer spent eleven months of it’s life in neutral Pinot Noir French Oak barrels. It was then re-blended with the remainder of the original Flanders Red that had been cellaring since it’s conception. After going through a secondary fermentation, we cellared it again for the last eight months. This Belgian beer is extremely smooth with a fruity nose that will leave no senses untouched. This will be available in limited, one liter bottles and on draft at Roots Organic Brewery exclusively. At 9.2% ABV, the brown-amber bodied puckerer is available in one-of-a-kind 750ML bottles for $25 a pop. and features the artwork by Ezra Johnson-Greenough, who also designed the Epic labels over the last two season. The official release party for the Red will take place at Roots Brewpub on Wednesday January 14. 2009.

My Bottom Line:
This Flemish-style Sour Ale pleases with its vinous connotations roaming within dominant yeasty wilderness, before light caramel and judicious tartness seal every sip.

Further Personal Perceptions:
-A veil of foam skirts the dark red.
-The flavor profile is quite funky, but the tartness is restrained, which should make the beer more approachable to some.
-The fruit character is also redolent of sour cherries, though not as bright as a Cascade Kriek for example, which uses actual sour cherries.
-This is very expensive, but when a brew is this well rendered, I don’t mind a steeper price tag.
-The body is healthy, although I’d prefer more firmness.

Bottle from hannont. Pours dark with a small white head. Aroma of tart fruit and oak. Has an oak and tart fruit without being over the top sour. Medium palate and pretty easy to drink.

Thanks to Mike for bringing this back from the West Coast. I am not familiar with Roots but this is one that perhaps should get some buzz. While not the most over the top sour ale it is solid and worth getting your hands on if you have the ability.

Aroma / Appearance - The reddish brown body presented a nice outward appearance. Tart cherries blended into the chocolate brownie base to form a dessert like concoction which left the senses wanting more.

Flavor / Palate - Cherry crumble filled the mouth with a wonderfully sweet and tart sensation. Ceding to a warmth likely from the 9% ABV it was as smooth as you would expect a well balanced product to be. I would love to try it again with a pure palate as I suspect my score would improve.

Bottle pours red amber color with little to no head. Aroma is sour cherry, oak, tart fruit, and yeast. Course mouthfeel. Flavor is tart, funk, sour grape, cherry, and finishes dry. This is damn fine brew.

Pours a clear red amber with a small head. Sour with some sweetness and some lactic notes. Also quite bitter with hints of barrels. Medium to light bodied. Medium carbonation. Hints of sour grapes. Bitter finish.

On tap at brewpub. Dark red with a thin white head. Sour cherry and yeast. No hop or caramel. I wish all sour ales were this good.

Draft at Fredfest 09, at Hair of the Dog. Pours a bright rubied medium brown, lights up scarlet against the light. Decent little tan head, if only for a little while. This one has a lot of sweet strawberry balsamic stuff showing up top right now, followed closely by maybe some bits of lemon and cherry. Sweet cookie dought malt comes up underneath, joined by some vinous acidity and tannins. The body’s nearly flat but still very light and drinkable. The fact that the malt can stand uip against all this without requiring a power transplant is pretty astonishing.

On tap at the brewpub during my portland bar tour. Nice deep red pour with a moderate white head. Nice cherry and oak aroma with a tart cherry and funky yeast flavor. Very tasty.
