Commercial Description:
This is exquisite ale made with a blend of wild and domestic yeast strains. Brewed two years ago, 3/4 of this beer spent eleven months of it’s life in neutral Pinot Noir French Oak barrels. It was then re-blended with the remainder of the original Flanders Red that had been cellaring since it’s conception. After going through a secondary fermentation, we cellared it again for the last eight months. This Belgian beer is extremely smooth with a fruity nose that will leave no senses untouched. This will be available in limited, one liter bottles and on draft at Roots Organic Brewery exclusively. At 9.2% ABV, the brown-amber bodied puckerer is available in one-of-a-kind 750ML bottles for $25 a pop. and features the artwork by Ezra Johnson-Greenough, who also designed the Epic labels over the last two season. The official release party for the Red will take place at Roots Brewpub on Wednesday January 14. 2009.

My Bottom Line:
This Flemish-style Sour Ale pleases with its vinous connotations roaming within dominant yeasty wilderness, before light caramel and judicious tartness seal every sip.

Further Personal Perceptions:
-A veil of foam skirts the dark red.
-The flavor profile is quite funky, but the tartness is restrained, which should make the beer more approachable to some.
-The fruit character is also redolent of sour cherries, though not as bright as a Cascade Kriek for example, which uses actual sour cherries.
-This is very expensive, but when a brew is this well rendered, I don’t mind a steeper price tag.
-The body is healthy, although I’d prefer more firmness.

Bottle.

Deep ruddy pour. Quite cloudy with a thin, white head. The nose is fairly oaky with a bit of nice sweet fruitiness. Soft vineousness with a bit of vanilla, light cherry and a kiss of soft tartness. Nice light lingering cherry fruit. It’s pretty solid really.

bottle. unfiltered cloudy rust, small off-white head. nose is equal parts solvent, tart cherries and cedar. mild brown sugar and nutmeg yeast spices noticed after warming. moderately prickly, lightly sweet caramel/munich malt, snappy red apple skin, tart cherry pits, cedar shavings, mild to medium acidity. body is somewhat rough but it works with the mild acidity and wood notes. doesn’t even hint at it’s alcohol content. i enjoy it more as i drink through the bottle. good stuff.

Bottle. Pours a brune body with an off white head. Vinegar, woody lactic acid toned, with a balsamic note. Sharp acidic finish and a full body. Tannin cherry and oak. Nice.

1 liter shared by Kan! Pours a medium to deep amber/reddish and a thin fading head. Aroma is a nice acetic, but not overdone- Flemish red- acetic, slight ketchup, cherry pit, toasted french oak, slight tannic wine and vinous. Flavor is clean, yet complex, not too acetic, just perfect vinegar character, no harsh or off solvent or phenols, nice cherry pitty, woody, tannic, wine-like, good body and tannin and acid backbone. Modest to high acidity in the end, but not overly sour. Wow very impressed with the overall quality and restraint in this Flemish Red. Great!

1 Liter looking Flip Top bottle though description says it was a 750ml. from hannont, dude you continue to amaze me. Shared at our J&J tasting, last beer of the night. Pours reddish with a tan ring. Nose is sweet and funky with cheesy rich notes. Taste is tart, funky, yeasty and nice. Yum.

In short: An excellent recreation of a classic oaky and tannic Flemish Sour.
How: Big 1L swing-top bottle. Consumed fresh soon after purchase. Tasting session with Montreal crew
The look: Dark amber-red body topped by a beige ring of foam
In long: Nose of classic Flemish Sour with plenty of oak barrel. Taste is medium sour, very tannic, cherries, plenty of oak, light-medium acidity, some caramel, tree leafs. If it wasn’t a for little hard candies sugary sweetness I would have ranked it as high as the classics of the style. I need to get myself a bottle of this wonderful tasty beer and bring it to a tasting too. So for once I’d be proud of my Roots.

On tap at the brewery release. Pours deep red, good clarity, with a thin smooth white head that fades very quickly. Tart cherries and wood in the nose. Tart flavor from the start, dark cherry, dry and a soft winey flavor. A touch more carbonation might have done this well, might have emphasized the dryness and made the sourness stand out a bit more. Overall a really delicious brew, one of the best, if not the best, that Roots has put out.
