There has been a lot of talk about this brew since the beginning of December, probably even longer. I stopped into Roots the night before the release party of the Flanders Red to meet up with a couple of friend. Come to find out, because they are part of Team Beer (a cycle cross team sponsored by Roots) they were sitting with one of the managers. I was fortunate that she brought out some glasses of the Flanders Red. Off the tap it poured red with a white head. Sweet, berry and wine-like aroma. Pretty dry palate and an incredibly perfect balance with the carbonation. One of those beers that just felt right in my mouth. Wine-like flavors with a little bit of malted grains. No bitterness and smooth beyond belief. Was a pleasure to drink Beardface (1034), Eugene, Oregon, USA

| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Jan 14, 2009 Updated: Jan 16, 2009On tap at the brewery release. Pours deep red, good clarity, with a thin smooth white head that fades very quickly. Tart cherries and wood in the nose. Tart flavor from the start, dark cherry, dry and a soft winey flavor. A touch more carbonation might have done this well, might have emphasized the dryness and made the sourness stand out a bit more. Overall a really delicious brew, one of the best, if not the best, that Roots has put out. leems (149), Portland, Oregon, USA

Aroma is a nice acetic, but not overdone- Flemish red- acetic, slight ketchup, cherry pit, toasted french oak, slight tannic wine and vinous. Flavor is clean, yet complex, not too acetic, just perfect vinegar character, no harsh or off solvent or phenols, nice cherry pitty, woody, tannic, wine-like, good body and tannin and acid backbone. Modest to high acidity in the end, but not overly sour. Wow very impressed with the overall quality and restraint in this Flemish Red. Great! Glouglouburp (2865), Montreal, Quebec, Canada
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Nov 29, 2009 In short: An excellent recreation of a classic oaky and tannic Flemish Sour.
How: Big 1L swing-top bottle. Consumed fresh soon after purchase. Tasting session with Montreal crew
The look: Dark amber-red body topped by a beige ring of foam
In long: Nose of classic Flemish Sour with plenty of oak barrel. Taste is medium sour, very tannic, cherries, plenty of oak, light-medium acidity, some caramel, tree leafs. If it wasn’t a for little hard candies sugary sweetness I would have ranked it as high as the classics of the style. I need to get myself a bottle of this wonderful tasty beer and bring it to a tasting too. So for once I’d be proud of my Roots.
