Commercial Description:
This brew was inspired by the historical burning of our hometown of Chambersburg, PA in 1864 shortly before the Battle of Gettysburg. During the burning, the brewery in town, "Ludwigs Brewery" was burned to the ground by Confederate soldiers. In remembrance of this event we created a German style rauchbier, or dark smoked lager. This beer uses all its ingredients from Bamberg, Germany, which is where the style was born and in by coincidence, the same area where Ludwig himself was born and taught to brew. It is made with a special birch wood smoked malt that imparts a light smoky aroma, taste, and dryness to the palate. The pilsner malt and noble German hops are used to balance this dryness making it very enjoyable as well as different. We believe this beer resembles how Ludwig himself might have brewed it over 100 years ago.

Sample from brewery. Poured a very dark brown with a tan head. Aroma of smoke, roasted malt, dark fruit, sweet malt. Taste is similar, with lots of smoke, more dark fruit, some light hops as well. This is really well done, as the smoke is not overwhelming. The body is full and hearty, nice soft carbonation. Overall, a nice, full, smokey brew. Very solid.

Had this at Coppers in Scranton. They stated it was an amber lager. ummmm, no. I thought it was a porter, due to the color and roasted malt flavor....ummm no. Anyhoo - this is the best smoked beer I’ve ever had. Deep and very tasty. Keep up the good work.

Draft at Craft Ale. Pours dark brown with off-tan head. Nose is smoked malt, but not overpowering, with notes of hazelnut, figgy fruit, red wine grapes, and earthy peaty spirits. Tastes of smoked malt, with a rich palate, merlot, earthy, and nutty flavors. Good balance and complex palate make this one a rock solid rauch. Not as rauchy as the Aecht offerings, but very good.

Smoke aroma hits you like you were attending an autumn campfire. Very agreeable, dark brown lager that came off on the thin side to me overall. Sampled @ World Cafe Live Beats, Brews and BBQ.

On tap at 4 Dogs... Pours a nice deep brown with a thin head.... Mellow notes of smoke in the nose with the malt taking the forefront over the hops... The smoke is mellow throughout not overbearing at all... Very drinkable, though a wee bit thin... Good effort from a good up and coming brewery...
