Commercial Description:
The name translates to Dark Yeast Wheat. This is a German style wheat beer made with hops from Germany, dark malts and a special yeast strain from Bavaria. Rubicon first made this style in 1987, batch #31, but the recipe was a bit different. This smooth roasty brew is sure to warm you from the winter cold.

Brownish colored brew with a nice head. Aroma of roasted wheat in the American Style. Not much fruitiness to speak of. Sweet and wheaty, some roast, chocolate, a light touch of fruit. I prefer more fruit in my Dunkelweizens.

10 ounce sample on tap at the brewpub. Aroma has some metallic hoppiness with some sweet malts. A little wheat also comes through. I also get a touch of chocolate, although this beer is not overly aromatic. Moderately transparent dark amber body with a smallish tan head. Starts with some vanilla flavors that almost impart a bourbon-like flavor to this. A little astringency is also present. Some dry, wheat flavors come through in the end. Different, not bad.

Draft at the brewpub. Aroma of dark malts. Deep brown color with an off-white ringing head. Medium body with moderate carbonation. Flavor is roasted wheat with some banana. Suggestions of coffee. Finish is quite dry and clean. Citrus notes, perhaps a very, very light clove aspect. It’s clean and refreshing.
