5/20/2007: Ruppert’s Dark is very dark brown in color and has a creamy tan cown. The aroma is chocolate mocha with some citrusy hops. At first, the flavor is roasted barley with some coffee. Further in some hints of citrus hops can be found. With each passing drink is gets more and more citrusy and bittery like an IPA, but this would be more like a DARK IPA due to the malt and chocolate/roasty flavors. The finish has a roasty flavor as well and is slightly dry. The body is medium-full and this beer is smooth and has a little creaminess to the texture. Overall this beer is quite good. I really enjoyed it and found that the chocolate and roasted qualities really pair well with the citrusy hops and bitterness. This is a well-crafted brew and I actually liked it more than the Southern Tier Porter!
16 oz draught at Clementine’s (restaurant) in South Haven, Michigan.
Note: After arriving home I called Southern Tier Brewing Company to inquire about this beer since it seemed similar to their Porter, but more citrusy. They confirmed that this is a different beer. It is brewed using a similar recipe as their Porter, but has 100 pounds less dark malt per batch...
