Commercial Description:
Although we enjoyed aging Batch #1 in used La Folie barrels from New Belgium Brewery, one of which was the renowned PH1 barrel, Batch #2 is something completely different. After a trip to Belgium in 2006, Vinnie successfully tried his hand at spontaneous fermentation using traditional, and not so traditional, Lambic methods. Out of respect for our Belgian brewing friends, we call this style “Sonambic”, a portmanteau between Sonoma and Lambic.

We stole this term from our friend Brian Hunt at Moonlight, our local farmhouse brewery. In 2007, we executed a second spontaneous fermentation, making yet another batch of Sonambic. This year, we blended those two batches to create our second bottling of Beatification which we are very excited about! Batch #2 has a big grapefruit aroma and grapefruit rind flavor with funky Brettanomyces and a tart finish.

Light golden pour with no head. Aroma of white whine, vinegar, citrus, and sharp cheese. Awesome flavor of sour grapefruit, sour apple, mild wood. A very clean dry finish seals the deal. Solid carbonation, mouthfeel pairs perfectly with the flavor of the beer. A great sour.

Bottle at City Beer in SF. Hazy golden color with a white head. Aroma of strong brett and funk as well as citrus and other light fruits. Flavor is incredibly sour and bretty with huge grapefruit and some barrel notes. A little bit of overkill IMO. High carbonation, prickly palate. Good but a bit overpriced at $25 (ouch!).

Bottle. Pour was hazy medium golden with a real nice cheesy aroma. Flavors were complex with a light staleness, deep sour character, grapefruit, hay, and cheese. Nothing was too overpowering about this ale. There was a good oak character to the brew but again, it didn’t distract me from the rest of the flavors. Real well blended. This is definitely real close to a lambic.

Bottled (from Cracked Kettle). Golden colour, small white head. Aroma is hops, sour fruits, yeast, some mild zestyness and also wood. Flavour is sourness, dry wooden notes. A brettbomb, which is very drinkable and pleasant.

Batch 003. 5.75% abv. Courtesy of zythum. What a beer this was! Pours a hazy golden color with a fluffy white head that fades rather quickly to a patchy thin layer. The aroma is acidic, musty and fragrant with yeast, cherries, banana, and some straw or hay, just a wonderful scent with many layers. This is jam packed with flavor, especially for a beer with a relatively low abv. Very puckery and tart right up front with sour apples, grapes, funk, grapefruit, just wonderful, then it mellows to a dry finish. Delicious and refreshing. Damn, Russian River just doesn’t mess around. This beer was a treat, I can’t thank you enough Ron!

March Houston Tasting. 1100th Rating. Pours a bright golden color with not real head. Nose of citrus, earth, spices, oak and sandalwood. Flavor is tartness with citrus peels and wood. Good carbonation with medium body. Finish is dry and lingering.
