Commercial Description:
Although we enjoyed aging Batch #1 in used La Folie barrels from New Belgium Brewery, one of which was the renowned PH1 barrel, Batch #2 is something completely different. After a trip to Belgium in 2006, Vinnie successfully tried his hand at spontaneous fermentation using traditional, and not so traditional, Lambic methods. Out of respect for our Belgian brewing friends, we call this style “Sonambic”, a portmanteau between Sonoma and Lambic.

We stole this term from our friend Brian Hunt at Moonlight, our local farmhouse brewery. In 2007, we executed a second spontaneous fermentation, making yet another batch of Sonambic. This year, we blended those two batches to create our second bottling of Beatification which we are very excited about! Batch #2 has a big grapefruit aroma and grapefruit rind flavor with funky Brettanomyces and a tart finish.

375ml Batch 2. Pours murky orange color with a small white head that dissipates quickly to a touch of suds around the the glass. Nose is sour, tart, apples, funky brett, musty. Initial taste of sour pours over the mouth giving a refreshing wake up call! Grapefruit citrus and apples. Oak and yeast funk linger in the background. Mid palate brings out the salty rhine bitterness finishing dry with above average palate duration. Good sudsy head retention. This is brew definitely a sour one, but more drinkable than expected. The acidity is well balanced and I could probably hope to finish two bottles! Excellent!

Bottle shared by an amazingly generous guy (Chris or Greg I think his name was…?) at the Rosso release at Captain Lawrence. Pours a hazed yellowish golden color with a light white head. Intoxicating aromas of acidic citrus fruits, apples, and champagne. Starts off light and crisp and then puckering inducing sour creeps in before moving into a balancing bitter with grapefruit notes.

Bottle from iowaherkeye, thanks Joey! Pours hazy golden-yellow with fast fading off-white head. Aroma has strong grapefruit notes up front with a heavy dose of brettanomyces. Flavor is nearly off the chart with sourness, but in a good way. Grapefruit is very present in the flavor with a nice funkiness. I had a little hearburn before drinking this, so it wasn’t the best idea to have this at the time, but it was worth it.

On tap at O’Briens. Pours a orange-gold hue with a small white head that dissipates, hazy clarity. Nose dominated by acetic sourness and sweet tart fruits. Taste follows suit with a hefty does of mouth-puckering sourness, fruits, and funky bret that lasts long into the finish. Probably the most sour of the RR sour ale lineup, pretty exemplary for the style!

Bottle, batch 002. Golden orange/yellow with a white head. Funky brett aroma, with nice tart citrus notes. Huge sour flavor, tons of brett, dry oaky must. Sour flavors are well balanced with a light and tart fruity citrus note. Dry puckering finish. A bit on the one dimensional side, the sourness really hits you in the face, but still manages to be drinkable.

Batch 2 bottle, thanks to WeeHeavySD for sharing. Pours a hazy gold with a small bubbly white head. Very sour aroma, with yeast, malt, citrus, and apples. Taste is also really sour, a lot of fruit, with some wood and yeasty funk notes. Lingering big sour tartness. Intense and awesome.

Sour Bomb! Add sour to sour and you get this beer. Newest batch, on tap at O’Briens SD for the 15th annv party. Not much of a nose, funk and brett a bit. Would go killer with food. Also very interested to see how this will age. Should the texture soften and the brett and other funk develope this could turn out to be something very special.
