Commercial Description:
Although we enjoyed aging Batch #1 in used La Folie barrels from New Belgium Brewery, one of which was the renowned PH1 barrel, Batch #2 is something completely different. After a trip to Belgium in 2006, Vinnie successfully tried his hand at spontaneous fermentation using traditional, and not so traditional, Lambic methods. Out of respect for our Belgian brewing friends, we call this style “Sonambic”, a portmanteau between Sonoma and Lambic.

We stole this term from our friend Brian Hunt at Moonlight, our local farmhouse brewery. In 2007, we executed a second spontaneous fermentation, making yet another batch of Sonambic. This year, we blended those two batches to create our second bottling of Beatification which we are very excited about! Batch #2 has a big grapefruit aroma and grapefruit rind flavor with funky Brettanomyces and a tart finish.

375mL bottle, batch 2, poured into a tulip. Pours an ever-so-slightly hazy golden orange with a creamy white head that settles in as a small cap fed by the bubbles continually streaming up from the bottom. Lacing is good. The aroma is a great mixture of tart and sweet fruits with a hint of funk. The tartness comes from lemons up front before the sweetness of pears and maybe apples come in as well as a hint of light malts. The funk is present but very, very faint. The taste turns the tartness and funk up a notch over the aroma. The initial blast on the tongue is a combination of tart lemons and vinegar acidity. The sweet fruits are there but it takes the beer warming up a bit before I can pick out the sweeter aspects with pears again coming through. The finish brings back the acidity and funk and leaves a puckering aftertaste. The mouthfeel is medium bodied with lots of carbonation and extremely crisp, clean and dry in the finish. Very white wine-like on the palate. This is another great sour from Russian River and while I probably don’t like it quite as much as some of their others, it’s still a solid beer.

Batch 002. I love Beatification! Straw colored pour with a nice white head. Really looks great in the glass. The aroma is lemon zest, earth notes, and definite woodiness. The flavor is much the same. This baby is fairly dry, with a great Brett presence. The sourness is up there--but not too over the top.

Batch 003 this is a great sour that comes about as close to an Isabella Proximas you will find without actually buying one. Great sour notes with a lemon pucker and zest. Slight acid finish but hey thats par for style and wouldn’t be as crisp without it.Brett out the yeng yang and over the top for sourheads like me ..Love this stuff if you like sours this is for you.

Hazy yellow pour, no head. Slight citrus and acidic aroma. Acid, vinegary, some light fruits and good old RR funk. Great beer.

Batch Number 003 bottle, sampled at Skyview Sourfest II and shared by faro99. Pours a hazy golden brew with an off-white head that slowly dissipates to a thin white ring. Aroma of grapefruit and Brett, some aged cheddar cheese, yeast, a hint of horse hay and lemon zest. Taste is tart as they come, with flavors of oak, grapefruit, yeast, some cheddar cheese and Brett. Finish is semi-dry, tart with aftertaste flavors of grapefruit, lemon and some yeast.

Fruity tangy nose. The whole thing is very grapefruity with a hint of dirt, tuna fish, and wood. Poured with no head, but is definitely quite lively. Nice lemony tangy finish. Nice vinous quality. Dries out nicely in the finish.

Pours a hazy body with little head. Aroma is brett and grapefruit, hay funk, with enough sour that I start salivating. Flavor is grapefruit with a little oak, plenty of brett and sour that finishes with a taste of old cheese. Carbonation is nice and overall, this is a tasty, tasty beer.
