Commercial Description:
Although we enjoyed aging Batch #1 in used La Folie barrels from New Belgium Brewery, one of which was the renowned PH1 barrel, Batch #2 is something completely different. After a trip to Belgium in 2006, Vinnie successfully tried his hand at spontaneous fermentation using traditional, and not so traditional, Lambic methods. Out of respect for our Belgian brewing friends, we call this style “Sonambic”, a portmanteau between Sonoma and Lambic.

We stole this term from our friend Brian Hunt at Moonlight, our local farmhouse brewery. In 2007, we executed a second spontaneous fermentation, making yet another batch of Sonambic. This year, we blended those two batches to create our second bottling of Beatification which we are very excited about! Batch #2 has a big grapefruit aroma and grapefruit rind flavor with funky Brettanomyces and a tart finish.

Richmond Summer Gathering. C&C 500ml bottle courtesy of cdumler, to whom I am eternally grateful for allowing me to share this beer. Murky gold with a small white head. This beer is simply amazing... nose of sour wheat, cat piss, barnyard, funky lemon, wet wood... good LORD, every time I inhale it gets better! Sour flavors, sour grain and tart lemony flavors, more funky barnyard-ish notes, woody... OMG. I went batshit insane over this beer - it’s pretty bad when the other beer geeks in the room are laughing while you gush like a schoolgirl over a beer. As I said at least a dozen times that night... a stunner, and my second ever 5.

Sweet Tarts on the back, funk on the front (like a Temptation backwards =). Stinky cheese with a leather smell. Pale yellow in colour. Delicious, one of my all time favorites!

Batch 003. 5.75% abv. Courtesy of zythum. What a beer this was! Pours a hazy golden color with a fluffy white head that fades rather quickly to a patchy thin layer. The aroma is acidic, musty and fragrant with yeast, cherries, banana, and some straw or hay, just a wonderful scent with many layers. This is jam packed with flavor, especially for a beer with a relatively low abv. Very puckery and tart right up front with sour apples, grapes, funk, grapefruit, just wonderful, then it mellows to a dry finish. Delicious and refreshing. Damn, Russian River just doesn’t mess around. This beer was a treat, I can’t thank you enough Ron!

This is one serious f’n beer. I mean that with all sincerity. There is nothing lighthearted about it. This is a punch-you-in-the-mouth, kick-you-in-the-balls kinda beer. Just...wow. The beer pours out a cloudy yellowish-orange color with a small sized 1/2" thick head. That’s about the only thing that’s not hardcore about this beer. A aroma that goes from 0-100 in the blink of an eye. Huge tart aroma, stinky baby-poo, grapefruit rinds, oak, funky, musty, earthy...heavenly. The beer has a acidic, mouth stripping feeling that I only seem to get from Cantillon Organic Gueze and La Folie. Feels like the enamel on your teeth is melting away with every second this beer in touching your teeth, yet its so enjoyable. Flavors are absolutely wonderful with pineapple/grapefruity funk, oak, sour apples tartness and dry as a freakin’ bone. Just a pleasure to consume. Now looking for my next bottle.

Magnificence in a bottle. Huge sour aroma with plenty of grapefruit and hints of citrus. Brett dominates the flavor but some citrus is evident. Smooth tart finish. A hazy yellow colored brew with faint head. I wish I’d ordered a case.

Batch 2. Pours a completely opaque goldenrod color into a tulip glass. Half a finger of head forms but dissolves into a ring quickly due to the acidity. Aroma is so sour I almost shudder after whiffing. Acetic but with a faint candied sweetness just barely detectable. Maybe that’s all I can smell anymore after having my nose hairs singed off with tart funk. First sip aaaand... WOW that is sour. My eye literally twitched after swallowing. The sourness tastes like grapefruit rind soaked in lemon juice. Easily sourer than any gueuze I’ve had. Also a lot of wood here for added complexity. Wood and rind linger on the palate and lips for what seems like hours. Same perfect mouthfeel I’ve come to expect from RR. Carbonation is exceptional, finish is long yet dry, and drinkability is through the roof for a sour beer lover, like me.

Bottle - corked and caged - at the Williamsburg Gathering courtesy of cdumler. Murky, cloudy gold. Small white bubbles on the surface. Aroma smacks of cat urine, sour wheat, wet wood, moldy books, damp basement and sour fruit / lemon juice. Taste is very sour with more grains, tart fruits, wet wood, horse blanket, funky yeast, lemon juice, and damp basement. Body is acidic and dry with light carbonation. There’s some strong astringency with this as well. Ends with more sour fruits, wet wood, lemon juice, sour grains and earth notes. In a word - AWESOME!
