kmweaver (2010), Takoma Park, Maryland, USA Apr 12, 2008 750mL bottle, courtesy of after4ever. Thanks, Tom! Pours a murky, brownish-straw color; off-white head with patchy, mixed-bubbled lacing. Very pleasant, tart aroma, showing citrus (lemon, grapefruit), a reasonable degree of funk, toasted oak, and some red wine notes (nothing overtly tannic; mostly soft red fruits); nicely tart, developed, funky and dry. As with most Russian Rivers that I’ve had (and opposite to Pizza Ports / Lost Abbeys), things improve with the bottling yeast added. Swirl and dump; the nose, etc. is a bit duller without the dregs. Medium-to-full, puckering mouthfeel: good, prominent levels of tart citrus and cherries and funk; not overly tart, not jaw-clenching, but refined and focused and bretty; without the dregs, the core seems a little hollow, but adding them in provides an even clearer picture (please please please pour the dregs): toasted oak and wood, dark red fruits, a touch of peppery red wine; perfectly dry, dense, with just the right amount of tartness, viscosity and horseblanket. A very nice balance between a solid fruit character and bretty / funky / dry goodness, which means I will likely enjoy this a touch bit more than artusory, who is hopefully getting laid right now. Medium tart finish, showing residual citrus, funk, and a bit of lightly toasted oak. Tasty tasty stuff.
BrianK (70), New Jersey, USA Sep 1, 2008 Shared by Rciesla. Thanks broski. This one was descent but had a one sided sourness which turned me off. Other then that it was a pretty straightforward sour reminiscent of other Russian River brews. JMFG (1140), Florida, USA Sep 1, 2008 Courtesy Oakes and Beershine. Murky dark orange-grey color, thin sparse white foamy head. Soft acetic nose, oak, lemons, the acidity relatively soft, and gains a more barnyard note as it warms. A lot of citrus and oak on the taste, the acidity not aggressive, but has a nice mild dusty component to it. Nice long dry finish. pepsican (727), the beer wastelands of, Iowa, USA Sep 1, 2008 So I finally get another one of these to try and guess who pops it and drinks most of it before I even notice? Thanks Irina, at least you left me a few ounces to rate. Orange pour with a nice sized white head. Oak and lemon aroma. Flavor has lots of oak, sour citrus all over this (orange, apple, lemon) and some dust/funk. Sour finish. juiceisloose (310), Orlando, Florida, USA Aug 23, 2008 #300 Courtesy Oakes and Beershine. This one pours a nice looking dark orange with a small, fizzt white head. The aroma shows sour apples, tart citrus fruits, and some funky oak to balance things out. The flavor is nice and sour of lemons, sour apples and other citrus, but balanced out perfectly by the funky oak and brett. The funky oak and brett add depth and smooth out the acidity from being mouth puckering sour. Medium-full bodied with soft carbonation and a creamy mouthfeel that goes down so smooth. The flavor was almost perfect and balanced throughout with a slight sour finish. A great example of the style and an awesome beer all the way around. mcbackus (640), Merritt Island, Florida, USA Aug 20, 2008 bottle shared by beershine and oakes, huge thanks: pours a beutiful cloudy honey colour good sized white head. aroma is is about the best i have had from RRpure RR sour, great tart, slight lemon, crabapple, damn close to perfection. flavour is great tart lemon, crabapple, fresh fruits with plenty of zest, the malt comes out at the endand is also very well done the sourness is near perfection, some grass comes in at the end just outstanding.
