Commercial Description:
Pliny the Elder was a Roman naturalist, scholar, historian, traveler, officer, and writer. Although not considered his most important work, Pliny and his contemporaries created the botanical name for hops, "lupus Salictarius", meaning wolf among scrubs." Hops at that time grew wild among willows, much like a wolf in the forest. Later the current botanical name, humulus Lupulus, was adopted. Pliny died in 79 AD while observing the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. He was immortalized by his nephew, Pliny the Younger, who continued his uncle's legacy by documenting much of what he observed during the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. Pliny the Elder, the beer, is brewed with 40% more malt and over twice the amount of hops as compared to our already hoppy IPA.

500 mL bottle from South Bay Drugs (bottled April 7th; how’s that for fresh). Pours orange with a nice off-white head. Powerful aroma of grapefruit and pine. Taste is a fantastic blend of grapefruit and citrus; only moderately sweet mostly just in your face hops. Surprisingly drinkable at 8%. I had this once on tap but I think I like it in the bottle better. This is exactly what a DIPA aspires to be.

Poured from a 22oz. bottle into a pint glass. The color a light yellowish orange, hazy with a great amount of foamy and bubbly white head. The smell is very piny. The floral hops are very evident here. It tickles your nose and gives you a preview of things to come. Finally the taste, the taste that has been building for months and it is good. The amount of hops is pushing through all other flavors. Being an IPA it gives you just the right amount of hops, floral and some citrus hops as well. It has a great feel to this beer. It is a fantastic brew. An IPA for the ages and it really is worth the wait.

Pliny made it all the way to NZ in pretty good shape! hazy, light amber, small fluffy head. aromas of pineapple, pine, citrus, peaches maybe and caramel maltiness. Flavor is kinda sweet, resiny and all of the above. Bitterness is high but suprsingly not off the chart. Very tasty indeed.

Bottled - 23/01/2009. Pours peachy golden with very fine, quickly dispersing head. Very appealing in the glass, makes me want to take a sip. Aroma. Grapefruit, pine, lemons. Citrus and pine. Waves of it.Taste - more grapefruit and resin, mmm, a hop explosion, with lasting bitterness. Hints of turkish delight. Very fine in the mouth soft bubbles allowing full the hop flavour thru. Don’t taste the alcohol. So hoppy but so light. A gorgeous drop

On tap at the Deep Ellum in Allston,MA. Waited a few hours to try this treat. Looked dark orange with a small white head. This was in a dark bar, so excuse me if I am wrong. Wonderful aroma of pine and citrus hops. This IPA was so good, that my awesome girlfriend(not an IPA fan) really enjoyed it. Shared with a German hop farmer(awesome guy). Great experience, awesome beer. Thanks Russian River and Deep Ellum for this great IPA.

This bottle is the same as the other bottles I’ve had in NZ. And I think it is unbelievable... here is why: It has so much drinkability. I can appreciate the lovely Caramel notes in there... the peaches, passionfruit and pine on the nose: they are all so obvious. There is so much balance on the palate. The flavour follows through perfectly - there are no hidden suprises... no even with bitterness. It’s not too think, not too thin, not too sweet and not too dry. It is perfection in a pint

This beer is ridiculous. If Pliny the Elder were a woman, I’d marry her and we’d never leave the bedroom. I’m talking about the beer, of course, not the Roman historian. From draft or from the bottle, once it’s in a glass you want to drink it with your nose. I haven’t actually tried that yet, but I might. I just might. I heard on a recent tour of Dogfish Head Brewery that Russian River bought their fermenter from Sam at Dogfish. I think Pliny learned from the spirit of the DFH 90 Minute how to be a hoptastic brew.
