Commercial Description:
Pliny the Elder was a Roman naturalist, scholar, historian, traveler, officer, and writer. Although not considered his most important work, Pliny and his contemporaries created the botanical name for hops, "lupus Salictarius", meaning wolf among scrubs." Hops at that time grew wild among willows, much like a wolf in the forest. Later the current botanical name, humulus Lupulus, was adopted. Pliny died in 79 AD while observing the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. He was immortalized by his nephew, Pliny the Younger, who continued his uncle's legacy by documenting much of what he observed during the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. Pliny the Elder, the beer, is brewed with 40% more malt and over twice the amount of hops as compared to our already hoppy IPA.

I think they should call this PINEY the Elder. Lots of piney hops in the aroma and the flavor. Much less citrusy than PtY, but a little tighter as well. Finish is tight piney bitterness that leaves you lip-smacking minutes later.

Hazy orange pour, small sticky white head. Aroma is grapefruit but not as big as I thought it would be. Flavor is a big grapefruit blast and damn is this beer dry, it’s like chewing on hops. Very resiny aftertaste and it’s stripping the taste buds off of my tongue. Almost too bitter but the focus is defintely just on hops here. Overal a bone dry grapefruit bomb and I expected a little more out of it.

Had on tap at the RR Brewpub in Santa Rosa. While not quite up to the standard of its Younger nephew, a damn fine beer. Like the Younger, poured to a light orange-amber color, with thin white head and good lacing. The nose and taste, while a little subdues than PTY, were still strongly citrus hops with a hint of floral, as well as alcohol kicking in at mid-glass. Mouthfeel was dry and bitter, all rounding to a long, somewhat bittersweet finish.

(500 ml bottle ("bottled on 03 09 09") via trade with WeeHeavySD, thanks Jon!) Pours hazy light golden amber with two fingers of off white head. Strong aroma of pine and grapefruit, fairly sweet and a bit sweaty. Mouthfeel fairly smooth but lightly pebbly, a touch sticky. Light, droopy, foamy rings of lacing. Flavor of big pine and grapefruit - quite bitter and biting. Hints of softer caramel sweetness underneath but very hop-dominated. Hops are a bit juicy and have a hint of sweat. Some alcohol apparency at times. I need a little more malt backbone to really like a big IPA and this one was just a bit unbalanced for me.

First of all the aromas are almost overwhelming. I could just smell this golden elixer all day. Maybe Russian River should come out with Pliny cologne. Anyway I digress, awesome aromas of citrusy piney hops. To match we have citrusy piney flavors that caress the tastebuds. Overall an awesome awesome DIPA!

Bottle. Feb. 3rd, 2009 date. Pours a glowing golden orange color with a big foamy white head that shows great retention. Sheets of sudsy lacing coat the glass. The aroma is very nice of orange and grapefruit hops with some lemon zest over a sweet, pale malt backbone. The flavor follows with the citrus and resiny piney hops pushing forward with subtle orange and lemon flavor. The toasted caramel malt lends a nice balance, but doesn’t overpower the hops. This one is not overly complex, but straight forward and well blended. Medium bodied and fairly smooth and easy to drink with a solid hop bitterness on the finish. The hops had started to fade already, but this would be great ultra fresh. Really nice IIPA.

On tap at Capone’s. I guess I don’t get the excitement about this one? Was very dry/biting for me, wasn’t much of a fan.

Bottle. Dark golden colour with a white head. Aroma: Floral & citric hops, clementine, peach, citrus, grass, cream. Taste: Hoppy, fruity & juicy. Notes of grass, clementine, peaches, a bit salty, grape (in the finish). Not very sweet or malty, but more on the dry side. The alcohol is well hidden.
