Commercial Description:
Pliny the Elder was a Roman naturalist, scholar, historian, traveler, officer, and writer. Although not considered his most important work, Pliny and his contemporaries created the botanical name for hops, "lupus Salictarius", meaning wolf among scrubs." Hops at that time grew wild among willows, much like a wolf in the forest. Later the current botanical name, humulus Lupulus, was adopted. Pliny died in 79 AD while observing the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. He was immortalized by his nephew, Pliny the Younger, who continued his uncle's legacy by documenting much of what he observed during the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. Pliny the Elder, the beer, is brewed with 40% more malt and over twice the amount of hops as compared to our already hoppy IPA.

[Bottle] brought back from S.D. and split with my dad. Pours a crystal clear orangey amber with a soapy, fluffy off white head. Aroma is packed with grapefruit and sweet caramel malt. Flavor reminds me of hopslam without the honey, which lends itself to a less sweet, more dry beer. There is some grassiness in there too. Ends with a nice lingering bitterness.

Bottle shared with MatSciGuy. This one was fresh - bottled on 2/3/09. Pours a crystal clear amber tone with a one-finger head. Outspoken, fresh citrusy hop aroma. A big beer with a huge hop flavor some grapefruit, orange spritz with a dry bracing bitterness that hangs around a bit. Very good - well balanced and not too sweet which is one of the things that I don’t like about some double IPAs

First off, this beer looks great. Clear orange, nice. It smells seriously hoppy and tastes very hoppy, bitter and piney but is not overdone. It is super hoppy without being tacky about it. It has a slight dryness to it but doesn’t seem astringent. The label is entertaining and I have to agree with the sentiment... update 11/04/08 bottle date Smell is awesome, resin, pine, hop essence. Taste is every good as bit as I remembered from the last one I had a month or two ago. Serving type: bottle Reviewed on: 08-21-2008 03:15:53

Draft @ Monk’s: Poured an amber color with not much head. The aroma was grapefruit, pine and hops. The flavor was pine, lots of hops, grapefruit, and bitters. Overall, a well balanced, not overly spicy, smooth finish on the tongue DIPA. One of the best I’ve had.

Wow. This is an incredible IIPA. Pours yellow gold with with noticeable particulates in the glass. Nose is citrus, lemon, tart orange, grapefruit, and some pine and floral hops. Starts like red grapefruit and finishes like a tart white grapefruit. Solid beer that seems to contain every type of hop available. World class...

The head of it’s class. I don’t have much to add that hasn’t been added already, but I am thankful to have traded for this. Beautiful beer and worth the hype.

500 ml bottle from La Bodega. Amber pour, grapefruit hoppiness with pine and yes, a little melon flavor.Mostly good balance of bitterness, could be a touch less sweet for my palate. Nearly white head. At $5 for 16 oz+ a little pricey but it is a well deserved legend. Would drink again
