Commercial Description:
Pliny the Elder was a Roman naturalist, scholar, historian, traveler, officer, and writer. Although not considered his most important work, Pliny and his contemporaries created the botanical name for hops, "lupus Salictarius", meaning wolf among scrubs." Hops at that time grew wild among willows, much like a wolf in the forest. Later the current botanical name, humulus Lupulus, was adopted. Pliny died in 79 AD while observing the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. He was immortalized by his nephew, Pliny the Younger, who continued his uncle's legacy by documenting much of what he observed during the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. Pliny the Elder, the beer, is brewed with 40% more malt and over twice the amount of hops as compared to our already hoppy IPA.

On tap at Hamilton’s. Pours a clear amber-gold, with a white ring. Sweet and bitter hops aroma, with pine and citrus. Sharp hops taste that picks up increasing bitterness, with pine and a hint of herbs. Nice lingering bitterness. Great IIPA.

Pale amber with a thick creamy beige head. Strong fruity hoppy aroma. Quite hidden the ABV but not flavourful as I expected. Good bitter aromatic dry end.

Hmm...I have been waiting to try this beer for over two years now. So, there is no way it could have possibly lived up all of my expectations. Having said that, if I lived in SoCal, I’d drink it...ALOT. Great citrusy grapefruit nose. Color is brite! I have to wonder why they filter this beer. Filtering strips alot of the essential hop characteristics. So, as good as it was, how good would it be unfiltered? Overall, I am a very happy boy. Pliny rocks!!!!

Courtesy of maspuros. Pours blonde, white head. Aroma is hoppy, yeasty and fruity (grapefruit). Taste, hoppy, lots of citrus and grapefruits flavors, giving a light bitter taste. There is a sublte light malty / caramel presence. A good IPA, but not really what I was expecting.

Sampled during Surly D-Day from 22-oz bottle. Pours a clear golden pale brew with an average white head that quickly dissipates to a fine film, white ring and some spotty lacing. Aroma of heavy grapefruit and piney hop character with a hint of golden grain malt and some white pepper. Taste is medium bodied, some light carbonation with flavors of mostly grapefruit, grassy hops, some golden grain malt, and some light caramel. Finish has a lingering bitterness with some light caramel and golden grain aftertaste. Everything I expected in this highly rated double IPA.

Bottle from Red Carpet Wine. Bottled 9/4/2008, it doesn’t get any fresher then this. Pours a beautiful crystal clear yellowish amber color with a nice white head that quickly falls and leaves some very nice lace. Aroma is citrus, pine, spruce, flowery sticky hops with a touch of caramel malt, awesome! Flavor is hops, grapefruit, pine, spruce and an underlaying caramel maltiness. Finish is grapefruit spruce bitterness. Overall a great beer that was a touch thin and could use a touch more balance in the malt dept. Stands up to the hype! Thoughts added 3/16/2009: That was an understatement, the more I enjoy this fine brew the more I feel it’s near perfect.

Bottle provided by and shared with Rogueone. Pours a medium amber with a 1/2 inch head. Aroma is grapefruit and hops with some malt on the back end. Flavor is hop that lets you know it’s there, but doesn’t slap you in the face. A touch of sweetness gives this beer a great balance. Finish was surprisingly a bit thin. The bottle is a few months old and the label emphasizes to drink it fresh, so that may have something to do with it. Still a very good IPA. Would love to try it fresh. Updated 2.6.09 - Guess what? Got to try it fresh. Aroma is out of this world. Citrus notes are more pronounced while keeping the malt character. The flavor is also much more crisp. Truly outstanding stuff.
