Commercial Description:
Pliny the Elder was a Roman naturalist, scholar, historian, traveler, officer, and writer. Although not considered his most important work, Pliny and his contemporaries created the botanical name for hops, "lupus Salictarius", meaning wolf among scrubs." Hops at that time grew wild among willows, much like a wolf in the forest. Later the current botanical name, humulus Lupulus, was adopted. Pliny died in 79 AD while observing the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. He was immortalized by his nephew, Pliny the Younger, who continued his uncle's legacy by documenting much of what he observed during the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. Pliny the Elder, the beer, is brewed with 40% more malt and over twice the amount of hops as compared to our already hoppy IPA.

This is the finest showcase of hops I’ve ever experienced. I only get to say that about one beer and I have no hesitation reserving it for Pliny. This beer has a wonderful aroma right up front of fresh hop flowers that will make you declare out loud your love for the vine. This is clearly a distinct experience from other IPAs commonly found in West Coast craft beers. It has a very complex nose that seems to present a cornucopia of aromas with each approach. Hints of Citrus, spring flowers, and even a bit of cannabis can be detected. The texture is thick and as smooth as they come. It pours a shining golden yellow with beautiful white lace and feels much more like a porter or stout going down than an IPA. I’ve found this pairs VERY well with spicy foods, particularly Hispanic cuisine. It also pairs amazingly with caramel, as unusual as that may sound.

Bottle via Dunk, huge thanks! I couldn’t wait any long, this one has been staring me down for a week now! Pours golden copper color with a medium beige colored head. Aroma is citrus, pine, and light caramel. Flavor is huge blast of grapefruit and pine, then some caramel backbone, then more grapefruit. Palate is medium bodied, medium carbonation, finished ultra bitter and slightly dry. Word!

Sampled at 2008 Oregon Brewer’s Festival. Easily one of the THE best double IPA’s out there. Spicy and smooth--hoppy and sweet. A perfect balance and a true treat!

Thanks turd for acquiring these. Poured a copper amber with a slight haze. The head was about a finger thick creamy and white. Looks very unassuming. Has a huge nose, lots of citrus, apricot, grapefruit rind, oranges, very pungent floral hop nose. The flavor was also quite citrusy, tended more towards a grapefruit rind bitterness than the resinous hop character exhibited by the nose. Still very citrusy and hoppy, a tad sweet, nice malt character. The mouthfeel was mildly bitter with a subtle malt sweetness.

Oh baby, its an IPA, but so much more. Pours creamy amber golden color, hazy but not super opaque. Gorgeous aromas of orange peel, lite malt, almost tropical. Rich on the palate but not heavy. Layers.Pretty much the perfect double IPA.

Bottle. Pours a crystal clear medium amber with a half finger beige head. Nose is ripe grapefruit, floral hops and light caramel malts. Taste is orange, pink grapefruit, malt and a nice resin finish. Medium mouth feel. This is definitely a balanced IIPA. Good stuff. I think I built it up in my head to be better than what it is, but it’s certainly up there with the great ones
